Are You Genuinely Proud Of Current British Music After The Brit Awards Tonight?

by , 2 months ago

My opinion is that the current crop of British musical artists are mainly average to poor with the sole exception of Adele who possesses a great musical voice and can really sing and LIVE on stage unlike the likes of Cheryl Cole and many others I would not care to mention all such is the long list of manufactured new artists who come and go without much trace.
I heard Blur won the lifetime achievement award (this sounds absurd) and I wonder if they have run out of suitable candidates for this award.
I mainly blame mainly X Factor for the current vacuum of true great new British musical talent. So many people seem obsessed with this poor quality talent show.

Hi CS, I've always been proud of British music, because we have a glorious history of interesting, original and often very quirky artists and musicians.

It's good to see Adele being suitably rewarded as she can truly sing and she doesn't fit the stereotype. Both she and Jessie J are wonderfully 'down to earth', and very British!

The only thing I don't understand is how Coldplay managed to win Best British Band for the third time. If there was a prize for the most boring and uncharismatic British band, then yes, they would definitely deserve to win that!

Blur won the Outstanding Contribution to Music award...which seems fair enough, they're not really my cup of tea, but they are an interesting and eclectic British band who've been around, together and individually, for over 20 years now, and who'd have thought it back when they were fighting it out with those delightful 'enfants terribles' Oasis!

Despite the dearth of talent and originality around currently, thanks to the X Factor etc, it's heartening to see that we can still produce great music in this country with great singers like Adele, and the truly exceptional talent of the late Amy Winehouse.

I've always been proud of British music, CS, but not necessarily of British artistes.

BTW, I thought Blur were quite good - for their era!

What I liked about the Brits last night was that every act performed and sung live.

Blur showed that as a band they were of a particular era, the Brit Pop period, and based on last nights performance and rambling and over long acceptance speech, showed how over-rated they were. If this is the best we can praise, as in outstanding contribution to British Music, then this highlights just how vacuous British music has become.

What I love is that Adele and Ed Sheeran, have shown that real and genuine music, a tune, a heartfelt lyric and an ability to sing with ability and passion is the true basis of music. Modern British music doesn't need to rely on American street music, rap or hip-hop for our identity. I don't include RnB in this as the basis of any music is rythmn and blues.

Adele has dominated the world with her beautifully crafted music, when was the last time a rap artisit can make that claim? Sheeran is totally unassuming but a brilliant songwriter and performer.

Bruno Mars, again shows that classy music with a strong lyric and wonderful showmanship can also be a winner.

One Direction winning Best Single is just an example of how the populist marketing of a group of young men and aiming that marketing at impressionable young girls, who are encouraged en-masse to pick up the phone and vote, totally devalues the real art form of writing and performing music.

A manufactured 'singing' group based upon looks and not talent, with a manufactured vote has no place in the world of real music.
