I've got a few of my (older!!) friends turning fifty this year. Does anyone have any good suggestions for inexpensive but memorable presents.............? I've compiled a photo album for a long term friend, but what do I do for those I've not known so long.....? Help!
As they always say Jazz, it all depends on your budget!
One suggestion, log onto Amazon.co.uk and enter into the search ... 'All Departments' ... '50 year old gifts'. You would be amazed at some cute ideas there.
Or have a look at this page :
Asda does a 'magic mug' that you can design by adding a photo and which only displays when you add hot liquid to the mug. Could be a fun gift that is inexpensive and fun.
Ooh I rather like that idea sidesalad, quirky, thanks!
I have ordered some small canvas prints, usually 16" by 12" , of a favorite photo as presents. The photo has to be a reasonably high resolution and optimised in a photo editing program but with the right picture, the memory is astounding.
How about a beauty treatment of some kind? Massage, manicure, facial. There are some good deals around if you look. I had several of these when I turned 50 and loved them.
Thanks roseangel, that's something I hadn't even considered, good idea!
The first thing I would consider but I'm biased lol! Gift voucher beauty by serena... Lol
How about a Newspaper reproduction of the day they were born - this is about £12 - so wouldn't break the bank !Or make up a box with all things with 50 on them.
What about a gift voucher for a meal for two in a reasonably priced restaurant.
A beautifully wrapped bottle of champagne. You can buy a cover for the champagne and it looks fab. I've found it always goes down well.
A lovely rose bush if there is one in their name as there are thousands now.
If they like to go to the hairdressers pay for their hair doing (Organise payment with the hairdresser for a wash and blow wave)
A lovely warm very feminine dressing gown for a woman.
A silver flask which you put rum, brandy or whisky etc. in when you are out walking and it's cold. Or a tankard inscribed with their name. A cut glass brandy or wine glass inscribed looks nice.
I'll try and think of other pressies Jazzj.
When a friend of ours was 40, Mr F made a compilation CD of tracks from the year of her birth. He did a cover on the lines of the 'NOW, That's What I Call Music 40' CD's with the title of, 'NOW That You Are 40'. She loved it, and it only cost pence.
Strictly illegal, I suppose, but we don't make a habit of it!
Excellent idea, thanks you, think I'll use that one :)
You can buy cards with a disc which has the appropriate music !
You have some great ideas so far Jazzy.
I recall for my fiftieth I had some lovely things from photo's, flowers, jewellery, perfume etc.
But the two that stood out for me were a rosebush which Sabre mentioned and a mounted sixpence on an ornate chain with the year of my birth on. The latter came from my eldest granddaughter.
I've just had a brief look on Ebay and you can get that pretty little coin costing anywhere from a fiver upwards. They range from necklaces to cufflinks.
Still I'm sure whatever you give even if it's just a card and a hug it will be special as it's come from your good, kind self.
Thanks Lillie, I know its not all about presents but I do enjoy treating people when I can. It's the men I struggle with most, but now I've a few good ideas I can use!
Hi Jazzj
I've just noticed this post now. I would suggest a gift voucher by serena but distance may be a slight problem! Since I went to a 50th spa weekend the pressie I gave was a "shamballa bracelet" this is the latest craze they are gorgeous you can get it on eBay really cheap it's such a lovely gift.
I'll have a look thanks serena. Its the men I really struggle with
Alcohol...
Got one in particular who doesn't drink..........
How about a voucher fjrom you promising to do something for them ie an hours gardening walk the dog or clean the oven
failing that look up these voucher sites and get a meal for 2 or afternoon tea
I am over 50 and to be honest no too bothered about presents so be honest
a really nice card it just as nice
I agree a card is nice, but sometimes a bit more is needed for a 50th marian. Nice idea about offering tasks but I live in a different part of the country. Thanks for your thoughts
For men, how about a jar of 'retro' sweets? You can buy these on line and put into an old fashioned jar and perhaps make or print a birthday label. (Google 'retro sweets')
hey I can see that going down well Sidesalad! Ooh blackjacks and fruit salads, and spanish gold, and flying saucers.........
Oh, they take me back!!
Sherbert fountains, dibdabs...yum! Do you know, I think that the demise of the traditional sweet shops has a lot to do with falling standards in maths..we used to stand there for ages working out how to spend our money!
So true Jazz!
Sugar mice, Parma violets
Space dust
Ah no, not parma violets for me, I never ever got the taste for those sidesalad, they reminded me of the smell of disinfectant!
Aniseed balls. 8 for a penny they were.
Oh yes I had those too, used to last for ages!!
A CRUISE HOLIDAY tickets...IF YOU HAVE THE DOSH!!!! THATS WHAT I AM DOING FOR MY MUM!!! AND OF COURSE DAD TAGS ALONG...nice x

Thanks Snoops, I'll take a look. needless to say I'm looking to keep costs down without looking tightfisted (and close friends know my situation anyway), hence the photo album idea..cheap but full of memories. So many ready made things imply 50 is old (!)
If it's obviously personal and you've put some thought into it, the cost won't matter, Jazz!
That's what I thought Feline, I'd rather have a thoughtful gift than an expensive one :)
Absolutely!
