George the vi

by , 3 months ago

Were any of our members around at the time of George the VI's death sixty year's ago today? I wonder how many saw the coronation when Elizabeth was crowned Queen Elizabeth. There were celebrations everywhere and many people watched it on the television. Has anyone any interesting tales to tell or are you all too young to remember.

I remember my dad in particular telling me he was a good king, but both events before my time.

Oh Sabre I was waaaay too young to witness those events (fingers firmly crossed here).

I saw pictures of her and her family on the Beeb this morning emerging from Sandringham. Doesn't she look well for her age?

Yes! She always looks lovely, LILLIE! An example in being a proper lady, we miss that these days as fashions and manners are poor, I feel. What do others think? Am I being pedantic?

Have to admire her Greydo

She is an example to us all, greydo.

Just imagine spending your whole life in the public eye. Her grace and dignity have been absolutely unfailing. There was a documentary on BBC1 tonight - second part next week - about her reign and all the different Prime Ministers she has seen off!

'Fraid not, that was about 17 years before my time. I do remember the silver jubilee though - street parties everywhere etc. However i don't recall anything at all for the golden jubilee .... did it just pass me by?

I remember the silver jubilee, was just at the age to appreciate it, lots of parties everywhere!! The golden....? Can't recall at all.....

I'll never forget the Golden Jubilee. Mr F and I were going to Barcelona by train and had to catch the Eurostar from Waterloo. If we missed it we would have missed the overnight train to Barca and the whole trip would have been lost.

The train into London was terminated by engineering work and we were told we had to wait for a bus which would have meant us missing the Eurostar, so we decided to throw caution to the winds and get a taxi from the wilds of Buckinghamshire all the way to Waterloo.

The taxi driver was a very nice asian gentleman who said he was quite happy to take us to London, but he didn't actually know the way to Waterloo. No problem, we thought, until we found that the route we expected to go was closed for the Jubilee celebrations.

We did get there in time, on a wing and a prayer, but we always wondered if the taxi driver ever got back!

My two were only little tots when the silver jubilee parties were held. I remember it being a bit of a wet day and they had to have it indoors instead of street parties.

The Queen looks so lovely and what a wonderful range of clothes she has worn over the years. I always look for the hats as just like her mother's they always look lovely.

Do you know I can't remember much about the golden jubilee other than I seem to remember the red arrows going over Buckingham Palace and they were all stood there.

I was three when the King died. We were the first people in our street to get a TV - nine inch B & W - and the whole street came to watch the Coronation in our living room.

We had a street party afterwards.

I watched the Coronation aged 7 at our next door neighbour, as we did not own a television. Theirs was small, with a large magnifying glass over the screen! It was a lovely day!
The wooden cases surrounding tv's and radiogrammes were absolutely lovely,as I remember. They were a pleasure to see.

by greydo, 3 months ago

The very first tv I can remember our family having was a wooden box type with a tuning know a bit like a radio..and the radiogramme was HUGE!

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

Yes, jazzj, they were huge, but you were a tiny tot then!

We had a lovely Furgeson Radiogramme, a deep mahogany colour, and a large lid with hydraulic hinges. Cool! My late Mother used it regularly, as intended, and as an occasional table. She made a birthday cake, placed it on the Radiogramme, closed the sitting room door with the dog (hiding) . No cake!

by greydo, 3 months ago

Lol Greydo, lucky dog!

No idea what make the radiogramme was but mum still had it until a few years back..it must've been four or five ft across, and yes, a lovely dark mahogany
