A well used present

by , 3 months ago

As I was setting the table for my husband's birthday meal to be shared by my daughter and fiance I couldn't help thinking and adding up the year's of how long I had had my best tablecloth and wow it's 50 year's old and not a mark on it or any wear. My Aunty bought it for me when I was in my early teens and getting married. It's been used for dozens of special meals, including every Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, friends etc. etc. How many things will last that long nowadays. p.s. It goes very well with the dining table and chairs which I have had for 43 year's.

"Aah they don't make things like that anymore", comes to mind here but I feel it's true of most things today.

Happy Birthday to your Hubby, I'm sure he'll have a wonderful day especially if you're serving up one of your feasts.

Happy birthday to your hubby Sabre, hope you both have the lovely day you deserve. Have still got some casserole dishes that I use often that go back 25 years, but I think that's the oldest thing I've got

Very happy birthday to Mr Sabre!

I've got some really old stuff dating back to my first marriage in 1970.

As Lillie says, they don't make 'em like that any more!

So true Feline!

I've also got lots of things from the early 70s such as saucepans, tableware, cutlery, glasses, my slow cooker, food mixers etc etc. these items have been very well used and are not stored for 'best' so yes, they knew how to make things properly 40 years ago. Mind you, I have looked after all of my household items carefully and feel most annoyed when things are beginning to wear out after 40 years of use as is beginning to happen now!

I think it's fabulous to make items last it's wonderful! You have definitely got your money's worth! I do get sentimental about objects when I get used to having them its a shame to let go when it deteriorates!

by serena1, 3 months ago

I hope your saucepans are not aluminum - not good if you are cooking any foods which are acidic.
I have a small egg saucepan which belonged to my Grandmother - it is, as one of my friends remarked, Jurassic !

Sabre I forgot to add, have a very happy evening!

Ditto!

I doubt anything'll last that long nowadays. It's all built so we have to repurchase in 3-10 years!

by G-Man, 3 months ago

Yes G-Man just when the extended warranty runs out!!! Typical!!!

And whys nothing made to be repaired these days? Everything is a "throw-away unit" Im told, even my blasted electric toothbrush cos the rechargable battery doesnt charge anymore! About a year Ive had it (replaced the heads of course) so no way that will make 50 years!! lol Anyone need a working toothbrush charger out there?

by madmumof5, 3 months ago

Not really, madmum, I've got a collection of the damn things! :-)

We have had a super couple of days with the family arriving with lovely pressies for Mr Sabre and enjoying some home made food, I'm shattered but happy tonight and I shall be having a lie in tomorrow. He had a good few phone calls from his randy girl friends which made his day and some very suggestive cards from them. Makes me wonder what he does when he goes out for his walks.

Getting back to the posting all the cutlery we used tonight is from my first marriage and also the steak knives. They are all like new. I still have some lovely wine glasses and tumblers which are over forty year's old. Small tables I have brought from abroad and many other items bring lovely memories back and they must be forty year's old too. I still have my first wedding dress too.

Thought you'd be having an early night...nudge nudge wink wink it's his birthday after all! Lol

by Sabre, 3 months ago

I give in Sabre who is purring nicely? Lol! I thought it was a question?! Oops couldn't resist!!

Doesnt Hubby get a tinsy bit jealous that you've kept your wedding dress from a wedding to another man? The other objects wouldnt bother me but a wedding dress or photos on the sideboard would niggle me a bit I must say. Or is that just me? Maybe you do have a particularly wonderfully understanding hubby!

by madmumof5, 3 months ago

Yes, she does have a lovely husband, madmum, and she was widowed first time around, so I think that's a little different...although of course you couldn't have known that.

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Thank you for that Fruity. Although I do have my wedding dress my husband has never seen it and I don't need to have photos of my late husband around as they are where I can look and remember him with love quietly. My now lovely husband looks after my late husband's grave and cuts the grass and has planted dozens of spring bulbs and in the summer puts loads of flowers in. We shall both be there tomorrow 6.2.2012 as it's 23 year's since he died.

What a lovely lovely man Sabre, you're lucky to have him :) Things move on but you never forget those you've lost do you? Will be thinking of you x

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

Thank you so much for your love and kindness it brings a tear to my eyes to know I have found such lovely friends on a forum.

by Sabre, 3 months ago

I feel the same Sabre, if it hadn't been for you lot I'd think I'd've gone loopy by now!

We buy lovely tablecloths in Spain at the markets when we go there on holiday, also rugs, they seem to be well made as we have some over 20y old with no signs of wear too.

by ihateavatars, 3 months ago

Only trouble with some tablecloths from Spain - they are really hard to iron......

by pennyk, 2 months ago

Lovely to hear you are using a tablecloth much nicer than place mats - very stylish - maybe you will set a trend !
