The mysterious Shawcross Bank...

by , 3 months ago

Some regular forum members will have noticed that we have recently had several new members asking for information on Shawcross Bank. I have responded to three of these, and Snoopy has replied to at least one, both of us asking for more information on how and where they have heard of this bank. So far, none of these members has responded or even reappeared.

Researching online has thrown up NOTHING on this bank, it doesn't appear to exist. Frankly, I'm beginning to smell a rat here! Or am I just being overly suspicious? What do you all think?

Sounded quite intriguing there Fruiters - good title for a new horror movie the "mysterious shawcross bank".

In 1940 300 people from the US town of Shawcross Bank deserted their homes and followed a woodland trail deep into the Appalachian mountains - none of them were ever seen or heard from again - police are mystified - An intrepid group of modern day adventurers venture to the town to discover the horrors that awaited the 300 in the dark woods of Appalachia - Catch it at a cinema near you from Friday!

Quick search on multiple formats and vectors - no such bank!

Just someone winding you up!

Closest is Shawcross Limited!

Yep, there are a few companies with Shawcross in their name, but none are banks or even anything vaguely financial.

Surely the movie would have to be called 'The Shawcross Redemption', Omen?

by Feline123, 3 months ago

LOL Feline you have a way with words!

I am already working on a script.

by Omendata, 3 months ago

Thank you, kind sir.

by Feline123, 3 months ago

It's all new to me fruity. It makes you wonder if someone's having a bit of a leg pull.

by LILLIE, 3 months ago

I've even googled it but there is nothing much out there. Like Omen said closest is Shawcross Limited but knowing you Fruity you will have already investigated all this. Someone having a laugh or what ?

by Sabre, 3 months ago

Yes, I did, but Shawcross Limited aren't a bank or anything financial.

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Hi Fruitcake,
Do you think that the fact that Jonathan Shawcross is Director, Group Security & Fraud at Lloyds Banking Group might be a clue?

by AlwynP, 3 months ago

I wondered about that too, AlwynP, as it came up in my researches on the bank, but decided it wasn't in the end.

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Yeah another banker bound to be a fiddle.

by Omendata, 3 months ago

I suspect that these are as a result of people receiving Nigerian scam letters which use names such as Shawcross to make them sound legit. Maybe the email text includes something about the 10 million pounds being held in Shawcross Bank and these people are trying to find it rather than respond to the emails.

by Sidesalad, 3 months ago

Now that sounds more serious than just a leg pull Sidesalad...I do hope people haven't fallen foul of this.

by LILLIE, 3 months ago

Bet some numpty's having a good laugh at us all trying to work it out!

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

That's certainly very possible, Sidesalad, but I checked the term 'Shawcross' through a lot of scam warning sites and nothing came up. I think it could be something connected to a financial scam though. It would be great if one of these members who've asked about Shawcross would get back to us and tell us how they came across this though!

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

I smell a rat too, fruits, but not sure whether the rat is the mysterious Shawcross Bank or the three people who have, coincidentally, posted about it.

by Feline123, 3 months ago

My thoughts exactly, Feline! :-)

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

We'll just keep an eye on it then, Sis.

by Feline123, 3 months ago

This discussion will probably get rid of them!

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Well if not, we'll just send the boys round!

Or on second thoughts, perhaps the Sisters would do a better job.....

by Feline123, 3 months ago

No, let's send the boys round first, then the Sisters can go round later and do the job properly!

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

LOL, Sis!

I think that I may have found a possible answer to this. I think it is a spelling mistake and that it is Shawbrook bank rather than Shawcross. The Shawbrook bank is offering 3.25 per cent on six month bonds and is mentioned in the Telegraph this weekend. The bank apparently has no exposure to the Euro and therefore may be less risky than banks that are according to reviews.

by Sidesalad, 3 months ago

Referring to your posting sidesalad I had my usual information email from Money wise and they mention Shawbrook Bank offers a 120 day notice account paying a rate of 3.45% also another account offering 3.35%,

by Sabre, 3 months ago

I thought that for a while too, Sabre and Sidesalad, as Shawbrook Bank has been listed on money.co.uk for quite a while too, but I dismissed it as at least three people asked about Shawcross bank within two weeks, and I thought it was unlikely that they could all have made the exact same mistake or typo. But it may be... :-)

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Could it be a typo in a published article or a mistake in a local radio broadcast?

by Sidesalad, 3 months ago

Could be the explanation, Sidesalad... :-)

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

To be honest fruity I thought it odd that there were three postings nearly the same so the mystery deepens !!!

by Sabre, 3 months ago

I think you will find the problem is that it is the Shawbrook Bank not Shawcross.. It is owned by RBS

by norman31, 1 month ago

Yes, thanks, norman31, we're aware of Shawbrook Bank and we've been through that possibility, see below... :-)
