What is your favourite collectable , most valuable , just treasured.
I have a couple of record collections and a full set of Captain Britain , Starlog , Starlord , Tornado and a partial set of 2000ad comics along with some early Marvel comics and some Commando minibooks!
Treasured possession must be my old Sun GT 10XL touring bike which I got in 1980's and still use today!
Whats yours?
Comics and old record labels are potentially very lucrative.I like royal memorabilia.
Most treasured possession has to be my grandmother's pedal singer sewing machine which I inherited. It was bought for her in 1880 for her 11th birthday and her mother told her that the first thing she was to make was a pair of trousers for her father-to justify the expenditure. Can you imagine an eleven year old being able to do the same today? And yes, I still use it today.
Funny you should say that toosie! Not long before Christmas my twelve year old found an old sewing machine in a second hand shop and fell in love with its black and gold paintwork (think its a jones, not a singer, and started off making dolls clothes and is now onto the real thing!
I have a set of treasured items that punctuate people in my life ..
A Russian ceramic bear figurine that my late wife had on her bedroom window when I first met her. I absolutely treasure this.
A Russian giraffe figurine that I bought for my grandmother in 1972 from a seaside gift shop and that is actually now worth a few bob. I also treasure this.
And finally a lovely clock that I bought my parents some thirty years ago and ticks away my life in exactly the same way that it did theirs. Again a treasured item.
I've still got Commando minibooks, Omen, I absolutely love them and have done since I was old enough to read them! Also got a big book of 'The Best 12 Commando Books Ever', a present from someone who truly understood me, my favourite Commando book story ever is 'Death Patrol', which is in the book. Got some Marvel comics too, Captain America was always my favourite.
Other treasured things...Dr Who stuff, cast autographs, toys, annuals, including the first ever Dr Who annual, (it's a bit 'loved', but I don't care), daleks, cybermen etc. Umm...lots of signed books, autograph collection, my record collection, lots of Johnny Depp stuff (especially Edward Scissorhands, even a signed Edward photo), war movie collection, and some interesting war memorabilia, lots of things really...some probably of some value, some not. I don't care really, just things I love and treasure.
Oops, forgot all my treasured Bowie stuff, and lots of rock group photos, autographs and concert tickets.
Aha! There's even more geek in you than you've let on before now :)
Geektastic nerdmunguous but we love you!
>;o)
Wow I thought I was the only one that remembers the good old Commando comic books - bet you even remember the most excellent series "Tour Of Duty" series the vietnam remake of the best war series ever "Combat" 1960-67 with Rick Jason and Vic Morrow total classic been trying to get a hold of the series!!!
Tour of Duty was awesome. And the first time I heard 'Paint it Black' was thanks to its theme music. But ITV cocked up the scheduling and showed it at random times between 23:00 and 02:00 on a Saturday night and even managed to show episodes out of order. I remember thinking "hang on, he died last week!" on occasion.
Hey, and I remember the Commando comic books too!
Oh, I loved 'Tour of Duty', it was fab! They brought Tour of Duty out on dvd, which I was going to buy, until I discovered that they'd changed all the music, some stupid row about copyright or something. Just wouldn't be the same without all the proper music! :-(
Did either of you like 'Generation Kill'...?? Wondered if it might be a 'T of D' of the future!
Tour Of Duty - Paint It Black was my intro to the Rollin Stones!
Combat was the best war series though along with Classic Movies "Cross Of Iron" and "The Big Red One" - "Its alright son you only need one" - Classic Lee Marvin Line.
>;O)
Whoah!
You took the words right out of my fingertips!
I've got every 2000AD from prog 47 onwards and most of the ones before it. I've got a complete run of 'Warrior' magazine and all the Doctor Who magazines from issue 1 up to the late 80s. I've got all the Starlords (until it merged with 2000AD), plenty of Tornados (Tornadoes?) until that merged with 200AD, a partial set each of Starlogs, Commandos and Battle along with some Hotspur comics.
When it comes to US comics I've got complete collections of niche comic books - Shogun Warriors, Micronauts, Rom: Spaceknight.
Other than that, I've an impressive selection of 80s toys including a load of Micronauts, Star Wars and Transformers (including an original Optimus Prime and Megatron).
Oh, and some first edition novels from a few of my favourite authors (sadly no one born before 1900 nor JK Rowling though or else I'd be rolling in it!).
Hotspur and Hornet...fab! :-)
Wow, never heard of Hornet... What was in that one?
brings back memories, my older brother used to have those
All sorts, G-Man, 'V for Vengeance', 'Spring Heeled Jack' (who was a bit like Batman!), lots of WW2 based stuff, and spy stuff as I recall, I get some of the Hornet stuff mixed up with the Hotspur stuff because the two combined eventually into one comic.
Whoah, I remember reading Spring Heeled Jack but though that was from the Hotspurs! He literally had some kind of spring mechanism in his heels didn't he? Or did I read some kind of modern re-imagining as Alan Moore did with Swamp Thing and MarvelMan, or Neil Gaiman did with Sandman?
Yes, that's him, G-Man...spring mechanism in his heels and a crash helmet thing! He was in Hotspur after it combined with Hornet, and re-imagined as I recall, but he started in Hornet, if I remember rightly...think he was called 'Spring Heeled Jackson' in one and 'Spring Heeled Jack' in the other!
Ah! That's it then! I know him from Hotspur! Your Hornets must be worth a bomb to English comic collectors!
Wasn't there some kind of snake super hero too? King Cobra or something?
Oh dear, I switched off totally when I saw them, I was a girly girl!
I wish I had kept my Micronauts but they were trashed when playing with them - I must have a look see if I can find the remnants as I think they are really collectable now but as usual must be with original boxes - I mean who keeps the boxes?
I knew you would be a 200AD collector - strange thing is I also have it from mag no 47. - spooky or what!
Wish I had started at issue 1 now!
If only, G-Man, I didn't keep any of the Hotspurs and Hornets, left them at home in my parents' house, and they moved house eventually and chucked everything I'd left behind out! Thank goodness I took some of the Marvel ones and all the Commandos, or they'd have gone too. I could cry when I think of what they threw away! :-(
I do remember a King Cobra, in a green scaly suit, but can't remember exactly which comic he was in.
Yeah, Omen, my brother and I trashed a few things by playing with them...but how were we all to know they'd become valuable collectors' items!!
I still have most of the boxes for star wars and transformers, and a couple for micronauts (though very, very beaten up).
Had a quick play with my Baron Karza while visiting the old homestead at Christmas.
That's not a euphemism, by the way.
Try telling that to Snoopy, G-Man!
My brother collects Star Wars stuff he has a Princess Leia Limited Edition doll and everything he has is boxed original its worth about £5000 just for the doll alone!
Cripes!
Wow, Omen, you could probably buy the real Princess Leia for that! ;-)
I love Carrie Fisher though, and that metal bikini was cool, but not as cool as Kate Bush's 'Babooshka' outfit! Well, Kate's was based on an illustration by the sublime Chris Achilleos!
I saw Kates bush once!
It was a nice Honeysuckle, her garden was lush!
Cue snoopy!
I treasure some pottery of my Grandpa's which are a set of picwick plates on a tray, some long white frilly edged cake plates and other bits and bobs. Some lovely pottery from my late husband's parents. An electric horby train set in it's original packaging and all the lines etc. and also a tin train set which also belonged to my late husband.
My record collection which I started when I was about ten year's old. But I have to say the most treasured possession I own is a imperial portable typewriter in it's beautiful case which my late Father took me out to buy on my 13th birthday it still looks almost brand new and I wish I could find a good home for it as I am sure when I depart from this land it will go to the charity shop or tip. I also cherish all the photographs I have of my great grandparents, grandparents, mother and Father and then my own children. I also have my 21st watch and jewellery case from Mum and Dad and a leather handbag my lovely brother bought me. The jewellery my husband has bought me over the years is very special as it was designed by him for the jeweller to make. Lastly, my shorthand dictionary which I have always treasured and would never part with.
Memories mainly of early childhood of family and friends through to more current events, they for me are pricelss.
Of course what I can't recall I'll soon delve into the photo album for a swift reminder to collate some more fond memories.
Jewellery and ornaments are lovely but for me it's what's in my heart and head that counts at least for the time being.
This is a bit of a sad one for me. Mr F's Mum used to collect limited edition plates. Great for the family as we were never stuck for a present on birthdays and Christmas.
A few years ago, when we moved her from her house to an apartment in a sheltered complex, we realised she had carefully packed up all the cardboard boxes that the plates came in and given the actual plates away to a charity shop.
No problem with that, per se, but they were, of course, worth much less to the charity without their boxes and their certificates of authentification, and that was the first time we realised she was going downhill very fast with dementia. So sad.
Thats sad Feline.
I feel for Mr F.
Thanks, Omen.
I know exactly how he's feeling as I watched my Mum go the same way.
That's the one thing I dread, still being here physically but losing my mental capacity.
Roll on the apocalyse....
Losing mental capacity is more stressful for the loved ones watching feline, awful, wouldn't wish it on anyone
i had lots of football programme,s in the garage, floods came in the mid ninety and i lost the lot 1280 all in the bin
I feel for you BJ thats the sort of thing that can reduce a man to tears - Can I call you BJ?
>;O)
Bad man!!!
Bad bad man!!!!
Oops sorry - man-boy!
Naughty, Omen!
Oh my Omen, that sucks!
Snoops, please don't make me laugh immoderately when I've got bronchitis. It's one thing spitting wine or coffee over the keyboard but I'm hoping to hang on to my lungs for a bit longer!
Something I said, Feline? :-)
Sorry to hear you're unwell, Feline, it's a focal time of year for it. Wish you better. x
Can't think what it was Snoops :)
Cough, bark, hack, splutter, spit.
Oops, sorry....!
Thank you for your good wishes, Snoops.
Have collected industrial-strength antibiotics from the GP sugery this morning so hopefully my lungs will live to fight another day!
You need your chest attending to Feline. Perhaps some campherated oil would do the job. Well rubbed in of course.
You have my sympathy feline, I had a bout of bronchitis not long ago and it left me exhausted! Get well soon x
yes sabre it was very anoying it was my own fault i should have them a lot higher off the garage floor thank you for your sympathy X
You are very welcome bluej. We all make mistakes we wouldn't be human if we didn't !
I felt so sad for your mum-in-law feline. My Father used to buy many ladies in the village presents and only found out after he died how pleased they were.
What a lovely man Sabre, and what a shame he didn't know how pleased they were!
Yes Jazzj he was a very generous person and if he had been in charge of his own money he would have blown the lot. Hence I sorted out all his bills etc. and left him with quite a lot of pocket money. Once he ordered two strimmers for his garden out of a catalogue then he went on to get a catalogue to run himself. No way, he would have ordered everything out of it and had no thought for the dire consequences. I sent it back and told them he would not be responsible at the age of 78 to pay back anything he ordered after I sent the catalogue back. I felt really mean but it was that or he would have had no money to pay the bills. Bless him.
Collectable comics should really all be kept in sealed plastic bags - I used to see em at the record and comic collector fairs!
Wish I had as most of mine are all that yellow aged look reducing their value!
bummer!
I reduce the 'value' of mine by reading them! :-)
And that!
lol
