Fundraising - what works & what doesn't?

by from money.co.uk, 3 months ago

Hi everyone,

8 of us from money.co.uk are running the London marathon for Help the Hospices this year (we're all novice runners so it's incredibly daunting!!). We want to raise as much money as possible for this really worthy cause so I was hoping to pick your brains....

What have you/your friends found works well when it comes to fundraising?

What doesn't work?

We don't just want to hound our nearest and dearest for cash so would be grateful for any ideas!

Thanks

Hannah

Hi Hannah ....

Having worked for local government for 20 plus years now, I am well used to that 'brown envelope' circulating with someone doing something for charity and asking people to sign a pledge form for whatever they could afford.

When my own section manager ran for charity, everyone on the floor signed up although mainly for a quiet life I suspect. And the way to go on an open 'sign and pledge' list like that is to make sure that the starter names pledge heavily, setting the tempo for the others! Sneaky but effective.

More latterly with remote working, such appeals are done on our own local government intranet system and don't work half as well as a brown envelope circulating or the physical presentation of a pledge form. And sad to say, 'hounding' is the only effective way.

But hounding can be done with a smile and a cheer and what man can resist a pretty woman asking for money, especially when it's for a good cause. You simply have to openly promote your 'noviceness' here and the excellent use for the money. And you do have to get in people's faces to a certain extent. Perhaps by leaving pledge forms in places of social or corporate contact? Even on-line with your personal and business address book?

Do I assume that all money raised has to be by cash donation or is this big enough to support electronic payments to a destination account?

Hi Hannah.

Have a look at www.justgiving.co.uk

You set up an account for your chosen cause, then just circulate the link to everyone you know. It makes it very easy for people to donate by credit or debit card, and they deal with all the admin for you including the Gift Aid collection. And think of the huge target audience you'd get just by posting the link on the Forum before you even started hounding your friends and family!

It's really easy to login every day and see how the donations are building up. I've sponsored quite a few friends and family members this way and they all exceeded their targets.

Good luck!

Thanks Feline, we've set up a justgiving page http://www.justgiving.com/teams/moneycouk so that's a start!

You're very welcome, Hannah. Look upon it as a small 'thank you' for the entertainment and friendship I get from the Forum!

Thanks for that information - I didn't know that existed - sounds a good way of fundraising and legal !

I was going to suggest justgiving too, but can I just say good luck?? Build your mileage up slowly to avoid injury, don't push yourself, and get your nutrition right. I unwisely got cocky building up to a half marathon and tore my calf muscle, not been right since!

Ouch, and they say exercise is good for you!! Have you had a physio look at it?

My friend ended up fracturing her leg while marathon training because her shin muscles locked up so I'm definitely taking a careful approach!

I'm around the 10 mile mark at the moment so it's not going too badly. The dark evenings make it really hard to get motivated though.

I did, and my local sports physio was sooooo much better than my GP who just said stop running! That was just over a year ago, and can only manage a slow shuffle even now (not that I was particularly speedy before you understand!). Well done on the 10 mile mark, big achievement. Only way I could do it was fall out of bed and run, if I left it to evening I'd never ever go. Good luck!

Thank you... I think I need it, only 88 days to go!

Do hope you mange you get your leg sorted, it must be horribly frustrating.

88 days, take care, it would awful to get an injury now!

Only 88 days to go. That means spring must be coming!

Keep at it, Hannah, we're all behind you.

It certainly is - the daffodils are already starting to poke their heads up in my garden!

Well done, Sis, for keeping the thread alive!

by Feline123, 2 months ago

Thanks Sabre!

I'm up to 10% of my fundraising target & 13 miles now which isn't too bad.

All of your generous donations have really helped!

I went collecting in town the weekend before last (I almost froze, it was in the minuses!) and managed to raise a fair bit. I'm out again in a couple of weekends time again too.

Plus we're hoping to organise some local fundraising events like a raffle.

Have you ever done street collecting? Aside from the temperature it was really fun as people were so friendly.

As for the running I'm aiming for 15 miles this weekend.... wish me luck!

Hi again forum peeps ... just to keep this thread alive and kicking, and in support of Hannah's brave and selfless intention to run the London Marathon this year ( come on, that deserves special praise! ), I just wondered who else had checked out the Money.co.uk's 'Just Giving' web page and considered making a nominal donation to 'Hannah's page' to offer some richly deserved support?

Yes, I am asking for people to consider chipping in here but it would be so lovely to see a few more names on there ... and everyone that does will get a kiss blown them from the bowels of my homestead! Who can resist? Muah!

How about having a tea party - perhaps if the weather is good have it in the garden. It could raise a lot of money if called a champagne tea party - note how much a tea costs in various hotels !I'm going to have one to raise some money for the Royal Star and Garter home !

by pennyk, 1 month ago

That's a great idea, penny. And a great excuse to have some Champagne!
