Rumour has been milling for some time that black gold (oil) worth billions of pounds could be extracted off the Falklands Islands and a UK company has begun explorations in the region.I wonder if this is the real reason why Argentina has recommenced claims to Las Malvinas for the last 6 months at least? So many wars in the past have been about oil much more than human rights and the usual reasons given.Expect much more tension between UK and Argentina in the next 4 years.Imagine how much this potential oil discovery could reduce our national debt?
Nope we are too skint!
And after wasting all our brave boys lives in the Gan it would be an insult to send them into another oil fuelled war!
I personally dont think the public would stand for it!
I don't know who they would get to go CS as our forces are so badly depleted these days.
Perhaps they'll try and drag hubby out of sixteen years of RAF retirement or me after forty years of WRNS retirement to 'have a go' but I doubt it.
I'm always afraid when the forces redundancies and budget cuts are announced as typically something like this is always just around the corner.
My Goddaughter is going out to Afghanistan in March for her third stint and she says the troops look tired and worn out with moral at absolute zero
So what does that tell us?
Since oil has been discovered it seems that some of the big boys are interested including USA oil firms. This may be the answer to keep the Argentinians in check.
Some time ago I posted a comment about whether we have woken up in the 1980's what with a Royal wedding, major strikes, massive public cuts, riots etc...and here again we have an example of history repeating itself.
Is Cameron seriously trying to position himself as the modern day Thatcher? When domestic issues and policies weren't going her way, she united the nation in focusing on a war.
Cameron is in a similar position now, his domestic policies are being attacked from all parts of society, his ministers are having to rework and retract certain aspects of their policy and he is borrowing billions more to fund his vision.
So what does the nation need? (Thinks long and hard....) Bingo!
A jingoistic war, a chance for all nations (including those naughty people of Scotland) to unite behind the Union flag, a few verses of 'Land of Hope and Glory' and some more bloodshed of young lives to help us focus on who the real enemy is - the Argentinian's!!
The first time it was about the rights of the Falklanders, their liberty and their freedoms. Now, more importantly, it's about oil revenues and streams!
Perhaps the Armed Forces will suddenly have a reprieve and their budgets will be enhanced and the decommissioning of planes, ships and human kind will be reassessed.
Cynical? Me? Too bloody right!!
Well, we don't have the aircraft carriers or jump jets to fight the Falklands war again.
If political negotiations and ties with USA couldn't resolve it, we'd have to nuke the Argies back to the stone age.
I hope that black gold will coome gushing from the Falklands; I have held shares in it for many years, and so far have had nil returns! I no doubt that contingency plans are in place, to protect the oil. In anycase the islanders are the owners of the oil and could all become multi-millionaires. The question is, will any of them continue to live there when they have enough money to live anywhere they desire?
