With daily life getting faster and food getting more expensive ...

by , 4 months ago

I wondered how many of you actually ate breakfast these days and what you had?

Years ago, when I lived at home in the seventies, it was always cereal, toast and perhaps egg or mushrooms on toast. accompanied by infinite tea from a real teapot. Nowadays, being a single guy, it tends to be a bowl of microwave oats and a cuppa or two, probably all through the week. I have not ate an egg for yonks! Having said that, for an indulgent treat, I will very very occasionally make a bacon sarnie with farmhouse bread.

How times have changed! So what do you all imbibe for your morning vittles, if anything?

Hi Snoops. My breakfast consists of cornflakes, bran flakes and a bit of muesli. Sometimes I have two slices of brown toasted bread. Once in six week's roughly we have a cooked breakfast for a treat but have a light tea. This is always followed by a lovely cup tea followed by another one.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

We're roughly the same Sabre. A grilled rasher and a few mushrooms with a slice of wholemeal toast and of course a cup of tea makes a nice change.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Aren't you both good?? Must confess I never ever eat before about half ten, might manage half a cup of coffee but that's it. Can remember the battles with my mum even in junior school about it but try as I might I just can't face it, eating that early makes me feel yuck for the rest of the day. My children however, all have breakfast, usually toast and cereal, but for a treat they like croissants and pains au chocolat

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

I'm the same, Jazzj. I start the day with strong tea, followed by a few cups of coffee, but I can rarely face anything more than a banana or a small piece of toast before lunchtime.

The exception is when we stay in a hotel, when I can happily munch my way through a full English with double fried eggs when somebody else has cooked it for me!

by Feline123, 4 months ago

I'm tempted to say that both hubby and I like our oats in the morning Snoopy but I won't for fear of connotations.

Seriously though I do like my porridge and/or cereal most mornings, failing that I like a soft boiled egg with a few soldiers....

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Connotations on this channel. sweet Lillie?
Nay, nay and again nay ..... never happens here!

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

No maybe I'm mistaken Snoopy, what was I thinking, as If that would ever happen on here.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Honestly Snoopy would we take that the wrong way !!!! I say enjoy your oats Lillie if you can get any !!!! hee hee - just jealous.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Me too, Sabre!

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Going back to Lillie's post, I must say there are times when I fancy a few soldiers in the morning.....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

I bet you do Feline not the toasted ones either if I'm not mistaken !!!!! naughty you.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

No, not toasted, Sabre, I just like mine lightly buttered.....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Aah yes one of life's little luxuries biting down on a freshly dipped soldier.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Dissssgussstin ........the lot of you.

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

I gather you're not a fan of the old dippy egg than Snoops?
I grant you they're not much good without something long and crunchy to dunk.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Snoopy, only you could be disgusted by a perfectly innocent conversation between the respectable ladies of the Forum about their breakfast preferences.

What on earth were you thinking? Surely you must sometimes fancy nibbling on a soldier in the morning....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Any hope of you joining me at the convent Lillie has gone by the wayside now after your smutty remarks. I shall have to ask Feline if she would like to join me as she is as pure as the driven snow just like (sister Mary) me.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

I doubt I would even get an interview Sabre. I would be cast out as a sausage eating, egg dipping heathen. Oh well I'll go down quietly.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Once we go into the convent, Sabre, Snoopy will no longer be able to castigate us for our innocent conversations.

But I do hope there will be a case of syphilis there as I'm sick of the bloody Chardonnay.

The old ones are the best, as I'm sure Snoops would agree....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

You might not get into the convent, Lillie, but I'm sure if you go down quietly you'll be welcomed in the monastery.....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Oh my Lillie, a woman that goes down quietly ....

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

I think I just beat you to it there, Snoops. You'll need to be quicker on the draw....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

MLS's the lot of you :)

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

I have always been slow on the draw Feline ... but pretty good speeds on the withdraw ..

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

Oh Lillie .... don't you just love it when we all join in ....

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

Lillie, has Snoopy been brainwashing you?

Come on, we know you too have a Mind Like a Sister!

by Feline123, 4 months ago

"but I'm sure if you go down quietly you'll be welcomed in the monastery....." Feline?

AS long as it's not habit forming ... :-))

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

All join in.....?

What are you suggesting now, Snoops?

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Better than the convent, Snoops, Nun today, nun tomorrow...

by Feline123, 4 months ago

I think the motto is for monks Feline ... "Form a Circle" ... that way everyone gets a bit.

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

I couldn't even begin to understand that, Snoops, except to ponder that the Sisters would not be able to join in.....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Blimey those postings of naughtiness came fast and furious. What do you mean we can't join in - one for all and all for one.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

I bet Harry Monk could make a splash here ...

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

Anyway, it's like driving a car, you should check to see if anyone else is coming before you pull out ....

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

Snoops, much as I'm sure we all appreciate your efforts to be helpful, I really don't think the ladies on the Forum need any advice about driving.

Perhaps you should address your comments about pulling out to the men, who seem to be somewhat conspicuous by their absence on this thread.

by Feline123, 4 months ago

We've probably scared them off Feline. Oh my word what would Donk think?

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Going back to monks, I understand that they do fraternise with nuns on occasions and can be very helpful towards them ... the first thing that the nuns are shown is where the hand cream dispensers are ..... how gracious! :-0

by Snoopy48, 4 months ago

Definitely don't want any advice on driving do we sister? Yes where are all the men today, has Snoops frightened them away.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Oooh er, Snoops, we haven't mentioned Donk for a long time. I dread to think what he would have to say. I wonder if he still has a sneaky look at the Forum sometimes.

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Sorry, I addressed that comment to Snoops when it should have been to Lillie.

by Feline123, 4 months ago

I wonder if they play strip poker in the convent especially when the monks visit. I could teach them that what do you think?

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Would it really be an entertaining game, Sabre whn they only wear one habit? One lost hand would end the game....

by Feline123, 4 months ago

You'd need to say a few more Hail Mary's after a game like that you naughty nuns.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Why do all the best conversations start when I'm at work??

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

How kind you are to protect my delicate sensitivities Sabre!!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Think you're the only one at the moment!!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

LOL, Jazzj!

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Off sick today, if I can stay awake long enough I might be able to join in!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Hope you feel better soon, Jazzj. Keep warm!

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Thanks Sabre, been dozing in bed most of the day - must be ill!!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Sorry feline, that last comment should of course have been addressed to you not Sabre, told you I was off-colour today :)

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Just seen your posting Jazzj get well soon.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Hope you're feeling better today Jazzj. I've also been a bit poorly of late so I can sympathise with you. You take care now.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Feeling much more human today thanks Lillie, hope you're better too x

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Lovely toasted soldiers and dipped into a runny egg what a breakfast Lillie. I remember Mum cutting the soldiers when I was small.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Yes Sabre my grandchildren love them too and each have their own themed egg cup. Mine is a cute Meerkat, they have Peppa Pig, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Hello Kitty. Hubby has one with a squirrel on the front, lol.

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

I have the cutest patchwork chicken egg cup! :-)

by fruitcake, 4 months ago

Me too - thick soldiers or thinnies and did you eat the loaf end soldiers?

Lots of butter was the recipe for success!

by Omendata, 4 months ago

My favourite bit of the loaf is the 'endy bits'!!

by fruitcake, 4 months ago

We always called them the nobby when we were growing up, lord knows where that came from!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

We call them outsiders in Scotland.

by Omendata, 4 months ago

Never heard that one before, Omen, my mother always called it 'the heel', but she was from Aberdeenshire, they have their own language up there! :-)

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

I'm with Jazzj on this, it was always the Nobby.

by Feline123, 3 months ago

I find all these different localised words for things fascinating! :-)

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

Are we now on about the crusts? That's what we call the 2 end pieces of the loaf!

I can't seem to get my eggs runny - either I leave them too little and the white isn't cooked, or the white cooks and then the yolk isn't runny :( But I love egg and soldiers - sadly my son doesn't feel the same - he loves the idea, but then decides he doesn't like egg.
Don't think we ever had it for breakfast when I was little either - always for lunch.

by yummymummy08, 3 months ago

In Yorkshire we used to nibble the "crusty" ends on our way home from the shop. - Mother not too pleased.

by Sabre, 3 months ago

Mine always eat the ends of baguettes on the way home Sabre, makes hell of a mess in the car!

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

I make a sarnie with jam and toast and take it to work... Or buy a muffin or pastry on my way to work.

by G-Man, 4 months ago

Porridge for me, every day. Nothing to do with being Scottish, it's just the healthiest breakfast to have. I do use Quaker oats though, I don't make proper porridge from oatmeal like my mother made us every day. Nor do I put salt in it, before anyone asks!

Like Feline though, I'll happily tuck into a 'Full English' in a hotel, but I consider that a treat!

by fruitcake, 4 months ago

Oats gives me terrible heartburn it produces so much stomach acid due to being hard to digest i guess thats why it makes you regular!

by Omendata, 4 months ago

Aww, poor you, Omen! I find it really easy to digest though, it's fat and grease my tummy doesn't seem to like.

by fruitcake, 4 months ago

I've always found porridge very easy to digest, fruits.

by Feline123, 4 months ago

Sorry to hear that Omend I too get the odd bout of heartburn. Like Fruity and Feline I find porridge goes down well enough. Have you tried it with half milk and water and maybe a teaspoonful of honey?

by LILLIE, 4 months ago

Worst for you is All Bran.

i HAVE A STOMACH ULCER BUT ITS USEFUL AS YOU FIND OUT WHICH FOODS PRODUCE MORE ACID THAN OTHERS LIKE CHOCOLATE , ALL BRAN , TEA , COFFEE, OATS Etc.

I am like a barometer although someone last night and a friend called me the Scottish Borat!

And no I wasnt wearing a Mankini i guess its the Charles Bronson moustache!
>;O)

by Omendata, 4 months ago

Sorry to hear about your ulcer, Omen, but the Borat thing has put me off my porridge!

I find starchy foods - and chocolate - will give me acid, but only if I have them late at night, which guarantees a disturbed sleep.

by Feline123, 4 months ago

OD I can sympathise, I had treatment for an ulcer last year. Touch wood it's quiet at the moment!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

I bet it's all the worry you have suffered this last year Jazzj as that can bring on an ulcer.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Could've been Sabre, am glad it's been ok recently :)

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Lillie, I make mine with half milk half water, no honey though as it's fine as it is for me.

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

What sort of milk do you use fruitcake? I make mine wit skimmed and that's watery enough as it is for me

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

Semi-skimmed, Jazzj.

by fruitcake, 3 months ago

I like ready brek with semi skimmed milk it tastes lovely and creamy. I don't have suger with it though.

by Sabre, 3 months ago

I can confirm Ready Brek is the best for you it doesnt give me any acid actually it makes my stomach better!

by Omendata, 3 months ago

That's interesting about allbran as since I changed to it I've suffered heartburn

by Sabre, 3 months ago

Of all the foods Sabre it can give me constant acid all day that even my pepcid or gaviscon cannot clear so i avoid it like the plague its the only thing that can make me seriously sick!

by Omendata, 3 months ago

A couple of weetabix plus some oat biscuits in a bowl of milk every morning plus soem orange juice is not a bad way to commence the day.

by creativesaver, 4 months ago

Nope i wait till i get to work and then pile into the fresh nosh - well fruit actually that we get given and free cans of cola and irn bru etc.

I avoid the free chocolates though!

I reckon i save about £10 a week so £520 a year!

Not bad when you add all them weeks up eh!

Question should be "what does it cost to have breakfast" and ways to economise breakfast perhaps as well are all looking to save cash on here!

I suppose if things were really bad you could eat the toilet paper from the work loos or as some people i know pinch it and take it home - bet that saves a bit in bog roll!

Me personally i always try and do a s*** at work - saves toilet paper in just the same way!

lol

>;o)

by Omendata, 4 months ago

You get free nosh?? I'm in the wrong job, I even have to pay for tea/coffee!!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Yes to make up for the low wages - its a con like all employment these days.

I was earning 10 grand more in my last job so it doesnt really compare.

by Omendata, 4 months ago

Trust you OD "owt for nowt" and you don't even have to clean up after yourself.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Sabre, its not worth taking a flask as often I don't get a break either!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Could be worse you could work in a call centre padlocked to your desk.

by Omendata, 4 months ago

OD, if it paid more than I'm earning at the moment I'd do it!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Oh poor you Jazzj - What do you do where you aren't entitled to a tea break ? I've never worked for a company where I didn't get my nice cuppa.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Theoretically I'm entitled to one Sabre, I just never seem to get there! The only jobs I've ever had where we had allocated tea breaks were when I was a student, the others were all 'grab a cuppa at your desk places'

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Very miserable to have an ulcer OD. A lot of foods seem to affect it as well and you end up with chronic pains in your tum !!

by Sabre, 4 months ago

You do, you do Sabre, amazing how debilitating it can be.

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Indeed its pretty horrendous when you get it really bad especially when you eat oats or all bran out somewhere without your pepcid pm or Gaviscon.

Pepcid PM by the way is the best for taking the pain away for a good while the Gaviscon liquid only lasts an hour or so!

by Omendata, 3 months ago

Amazing OD, only a Scotsman would recommend 'committing to earth' at work to save on loo paper, not to mention the water, liquid soap and paper towels for subsequent ablutions thereafter! I guess the bigger the a***, the bigger the savings!

by Snoopy48, 3 months ago

I think its a good money saving tip actually.

All money saving tips if they work add up and in this climate when I see couples arguing over money and people getting so desperate they start to do things they never would have before it does make sense!

Yes Im scottish and I am careful - Not "Tight"
Tight would be as you say stealing the toilet paper and soap etc but I do know people at my local gym who do it!

by Omendata, 3 months ago

I love breakfast: "Eat Breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a Pauper" so the saying goes. Breakfast really sets you up for the day. I have freshly squeezed orange juice, a home-made muesli mix made with oats, dried fruits, grains and seeds with fresh fruit followed by wholemeal toast on weekdays, and an egg and bacon breakfast as a treat on Sunday to accompany reading the Sunday paper. I don't crave snacks or biscuits during the day so it really does fill you up and saves money on random snacks. It's British Farmhouse Breakfast Week next week so I expect that we will get lots of ideas thrown at us!

by Sidesalad, 4 months ago

I love toast (home made bread) and pate (approx 60p Aldi). The pate lasts 3 days.... I also love smoked scottish salmon in scrambled egg, parsley (home grown) and pepper, with filter coffee. Then lunch can be missed, and then dinner:- another story! As Sidesalad says, snacks can easily be avoided following a good breakfast.

by greydo, 4 months ago

I always have cereal and a cup of coffee (Maxwell House) - we have a whole cupboard and on top of the fridge completely devoted to cereal :) We buy a lot of it when its on offer to save money as they always have long Best Before dates anyway.

But it is nice (on the VERY RARE occasion) to have a cooked fry-up, especially on an even rarer occasion of staying in a hotel!

by yummymummy08, 4 months ago

I doesn't matter what time I get up either - breakfast is always first!

by yummymummy08, 4 months ago

The same at my house Yummy. A cup of tea followed shortly after with breakfast then I can face the day.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

tea and toast and rush for the train toast in hand

by bluej, 3 months ago

Used to see many people doing that bluej!

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

Now I have my ready brek, a slice of brown toast with a cup of tea followed (if I cough loudly) a cup of coffee and watch the morning news on t.v. - good to be retired.

by Sabre, 3 months ago

Oh now there we disagree Sabre, I can't bear food or tv in the morning! Can just about cope with the radio but that's it

by Jazzj, 3 months ago

I used to eat my toast riding my bike to work when I was about eighteen.
