Reading the article about oysters on the internet this morning it says that three quarters of british-grown oysters contain the highly infectious norovirus a study has found which causes vomiting and diarrhoea. Can't say I fancy eating oysters now and never had one before so shall you still be eating them.
The thought of swallowing whole, raw shellfish would be quite enough to make me vomit without the presence of a virus!
I do like cooked oysters though - steak and oyster pie is delicious.
Can't stand the thought of eating oysters. I imagine the consistency is like congealed mucus. Yuck!
I think it's probably worse than that, G-Man - how about cold, fishy, congealed mucus......?
Oh, I wish I'd read that *before* lunch...
Well I have to say nothing goes in my mouth unless I can vouch for it ... and thank goodness oysters have never, and never will, passed my lips. And oysters never give you anything back, after all, they are shellfish! Best way to check an oyster that is 'off' is to feel if it is clammy ... and aren't they all!
What did the boyfriend oyster say to the girlfriend oyster?
You never open up to me!
Hi Sabre, thanks for the warning, but I'm safe as I can't stand them!
Any raw shellfish such as oysters, clams and mussels are going to have some risk to health because they are filter feeders and we eat the whole thing including the contents of their digestive system. I have eaten all sorts of raw fish and shellfish in the past (and survived!)but have been sure that they came from the safest possible sources and maybe I was lucky that only once do I remember feeling unwell afterwards. I do not take the risk these days as I am not enough of a fan of oysters.
Oh dear how awful! And they say its an aphrodasic what a shame thankfully i'm not in need of one!!! Lol
"I heard oysters are an aphrodisiac - so I bought two dozen but three of them didn't work!" .....
I think you've been had, Snoopy... lol
From the sound of it, it's Snoopy who's been doing the having!
Yeah G-Man! He's not denying it!
Love it, G-Man!
A friend of Bear Grylls ate a raw slug for a bet.
He ended up with meningitis - its the same with crabs etc they all have microscopic parasites living on them - why would you want to eat anything raw these days is beyond me!
Ooh, I couldn't eat a slug! Couldn't even touch a slug!
Me too after hearing that story it makes it even more horrifying....
This thread is getting more horrible by the minute.
Eating slugs.....WTF?
Look on the bright side, if you eat them on New Year's Day you're giving your weight loss resolution a kick start!
You always have the positive view, G-Man!
Just dropping some 'pearls' of wisdom :)
I always thought you were cultured!
Heh, cultured like those petri dishes of winter vomiting virus... Very good :)
Hmm. Should the puns keep coming or should we 'clam' up?
Well, I think we should flex our mussels here, and insist on a continuation of the humorous puns. It fair warms the cockles of my heart!
You all make me laugh what a clever lot you are with your puns.
It's all very well you making these puns about shell fish but why don't you CLAM up.
There that's my contribution but do keep the puns going - great fun.
Ah, dear Sabre, Whelk-ome to the pun discussion!
If I hear many more puns about them I could get very crabby and maybe lob-ster them out of the window.
How about that one then Feline - does it come up to scratch?
What a load of "crab pots" we are aren't we?
Yep, no need to be a shrimping violet here!
I wanted to add something but maybe that's just shellfish of me. I'm off to look at some internet prawn now.
Lol!! Excellent! Loving it!
Oysters are supposed to be hermaphrodite so why do the best ones squirt when you eat them? ( read into that what you will ...... )
And there was me thinking they just slid down the back of your throat Snoopy, no chewing involved !!
Sounds like a deep throat blow-job to me....
>;o()---'
AS a man of the world, I don't think that you have to actually chew or 'eat out' for squirting to happen .. I always understood it was a sign of appreciation! But as the actress said to the bishop ... 'Have I come across you before?'
Never tried them Sabre and as you know the younger members of my family have just been through the mill with this or a similar virus but I doubt if their bout can be attributed to Oysters.
Seeing them suffer the way they have and knowing this fact that they are infectious I doubt any of us will be trying them out.
And lead , arsenic , mercury and just about everything else that is in sewage and factory spillages into the sea.
I personally try to avoid eating anything that has come from the sea - in the future - well at least before 20/12/2012 the sea will not be fit to eat anything from.
See us humans - we ruin everything everywhere we go - if aliens came to this world once in the past its no wonder they didnt come back.
We have to keep piling sewage into the sea!
It's the only thing keeping Cthulhu and the Great Old Ones asleep at the bottom of the ocean!
Not forgetting the secrets of Yggdrassil...
I'll have a pint of what you're drinking, Omen!
People underestimate the seriousness of food poisoning. My wife and I were very nearly hospitalised with this in Spain and spent 3 weeks of a long winter holiday recovering in the villa eating nothing but rice. Her immune system is now permanently damaged and she has some related problems which will always be with her.
In addition a friend of mine lost his wife to food poisoning, she felt very unwell for 3 or 4 days but struggled on as they were moving house and had 3 young children. After 4 days the poisons had damaged her internal organs and although she went to hospital they could do nothing for her as the damage was too great.
BE VERY CAREFUL (remember Michael Winner ?).
Omg! How awful that is so sad hearing your personal account of food poisoning thank you for bringing it to our attention
Can be very serious indeed, sorry to hear your story
What a horrible story. You are so right, food poisoning can be extremely serious. I would never eat raw shellfish. I think the risks are too great.
I don't eat raw shellfish because I just don't like it, but if I did, I wouldn't eat it, Sidesalad's right, it's too risky.
I had serious food poisoning once in Africa, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! I wanted to die, it was so bad, but I survived and learned not to take chances by eating food in very suspect environments again.
My closest friend was very ill in France when she ate some prawns which turned out to be off.
My ex was very ill in Goa (I was fine, being a veggie..it has its plus points!)
That is really a very sad story. No one should feel they have to battle on when they are unwell, but unfortunately hindsight is a great thing--
I am surprised to learn that sabre, as I would have tended to associate shellfish etc more with salmonella. I think of norovirus as more of an airborne, (and also unfortunately transmissible via breakdown in the chain of hygiene when one has the bug)very virulent diarrhoea and vomiting bug. Tends to spread when many are together if someone has it and starts with the symptoms, like a bus tour or cruise.Basic good hygiene like handwashing before and after preparing food or going to toilet, plus dealing sensibly with the dehydration it can cause, plus rest, is usually the answer.exceptions being the very young or very old might need medical help sooner than us as they are more vulnerable and can't afford to become dehydrated.
