According to the news today the disabled French lady kidnapped from a Kenyan resort island has died in captivity in Somalia. They think failing health contributed to her death.
Do you think people should stop going on holiday anywhere near to where people are being kidnapped or would this be giving into these pirates? France is enraged with
what has happened to this poor lady.
It is a dreadful story Sabre.
Rather than having to stop travel to beautiful countries such as Kenya there should be some concerted pressure to get the Kenyan police and other authorities to prevent kidnap in the first place.
I would not go to Kenya again until there is some proof that something is being done about these Somali bandits.
It does seem a shame that because of these dreadful pirates thousands
of holiday makers may not be able to visit these beautiful islands or
not go as far as they would wish.
I think no area in the world should be "banned" from visiting but the traveller should head Government advice on where to travel and what precautions to take. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office is, I find, the best place to contact before going on holidays. You should also contact the Embassy/Consulate of the country you are also wishing to visit. This will give you a good point to start on helping you to make a safe decision.
Interesting question!
In principle, I don't think anyone should be stopped going on holiday to wherever they want. On the other hand, banning holidays to a crime hotspot would apply pressure to the local government to stamp out crime or else face losing tourism money. It could be pretty effective.
Yes the best thing would be to stamp out crime as you say G-Man. They
won't want to lose their tourism trade but I would think people will
think twice before going if they don't do something drastic about it.
Wouldn't you love to see the Navy or any country's Navy step it up a notch or two in those waters? I know I would.
Or just arm the tourists with AK-47s and see how many pirate attacks there are then!
Lol now there's an idea G-Man, I wonder where they hold the training classes for them ???
Drunk tourists with AK-47s?? Think I'd rather face the Somali pirates!
Not intending to be flippant...it was a dreadful thing that happened to the lady who died, and terrible for her family.
Well, I certainly wouldn't go there, Sabre!
Poor lady, as you say.
