Has anyone any experience of pet insurance?

What's the best policy? Do I need to take it out when my dog is a puppy? Does anyone have any experience of how the insurers pay out, or whether the premiums rise unfairly (or not) as the dog gets older? All views appreciated, thanks

I would unreservedly recommend National Farmer's Union. We have whippets and a lurcher rescued from a ditch. She badly injured her leg and NFU paid out in full for her treatment. There is a limit to the payout. At that time it was £2,000. Fortunately we never got up to the limit although at one point it looked as if we would. Yes it's a good idea to take it out now. 10 is the age at which limitations start to be put on payouts. All 3 dogs are now over 10 and we pay £56.13 per month.

I did the price comparison for my almost ten year old cat
and found that morethan seemed to be the best one. I pay £9.39 per month and it covers agood amount of costs should he become
ill or have an accident. You could also try the Insurance section
on money.co.uk. Hope this will help

I have been with e&l insurance for 3 years - premium has stayed the same and had to claim once as well for my cocker spaniel. I do recommend them!

I arranged mine through the PDSA, and they've been quick processing claims. I'd definitely take out insurance when its a puppy in case they eat anything they shouldn't. My insurer pays the vet direct, but when I took it out there were a fair few where you had to pay first then claim back

Here is website for NFU as I see that they aren't listed on Insurance tab.

It looks as if premiums are age related as we were only paying £16.97 per month in 2004 for 3 dogs.
