Who loves Elvis?

by , 7 months ago

I love Elvis Presley as an artist but never actually became a fan until after his death in 1977 when I bought a Daily Express promotion vinyl album of Elvis and the rest is history. And that album was in mono!

My first date ( 1979 ) with my late wife was to see 'Elvis the Musical' at the Astoria Theatre in the Tottenham Court Road, London. That was a superb show and even though it was a tribute show, the excitement of the guy shone through.

This week I tried to book some tickets for a local Elvis tribute show and I was put through an automated telephone order line. The options were :

(One) For the money
(Two) For the show ...

Cool huh? So any Elvis lovers out there?

Lol, Snoops! Yes, I'm a big Elvis fan. I used to watch his movies as a little girl just to hear him sing. My fave Elvis show is the '68 Comeback Special...Elvis at his coolest in black leather! I think my fave song (although it's really hard to pick just one!) is 'An American Trilogy', I just love it!

Eventually, when I was in the US, I went to Graceland...which was wonderful, although I couldn't get over how small and modest it was, I imagined it so much bigger, and I sat in his plane, the Lisa Marie...it was lovely!

I also visited the cafe where he had his peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and tried one...to die for...probably literally! I went to the car museum where they keep his cars, that was wonderful too, especially to a petrolhead like me!

Did the tour of RCA Studios, where they've never fixed, and still treasure, the cupboard door in the studio that he kicked in while having a strop about something!

But, the highlight for me personally was the tour of Sun Studio, if you can call going round one room a tour! His freestanding microphone is still there. At the end of the tour, the studio lights are killed and a minute's silence is held for Elvis while a spotlight shines on the mike...I don't think anyone in that room had a dry eye when the lights came up...so incredibly emotive. As is his grave at Graceland...I've never seen so many grown men cry!

My daughter loves him too, her party piece is a hilarious rendition of 'Return to Sender' (her fave Elvis song) complete with a perfect lip curl! :-)

What a fantastic response Fruitcake! Loved what you had to say .... my passion is to go to Gracelands and I'll probably do that next year if I can find someone to go with.

I met a guy recently who's a massive Elvis fan and he was telling me that Gracelands is set in a suburban, almost run down area ... the term 'juxtaposition' springs to mind!

And because I thrive on Elvis tribute singers now, I am still falling in love with some of his lesser know hits ... namely 'It's Midnight' and '20 Days and 20 Nights'. Just adore those songs ... it brings out the 'old romantic' in me!

Actually, I toned it down a bit, didn't want to come across as a freak, but I do adore Elvis!

Your friend's right, I went in the late 1990s and the area was a bit run-down even then, but the feeling you get when you see those iconic gates open and you sail through in your tour bus...so exciting! The house itself is tacky, but who cares...it's Elvis's house! All his costumes are on display, and his WW2 army uniform, and all his gold records are in what was his squash court. His horses (well, the descendents of) are still out in the paddock behind the house, and you can even go and look at Colonel Parker's office at the back of the house. You must go, you'd love it!

I've got a good album called 'Elvis Ultimate Gospel'...Elvis's heart was in gospel music, and although the songs were all originally recorded in mono, they've been remastered from the original tapes, great stuff!

Yes that was very interesting thanks Fruity.

Hi Snoopy. I am a big Elvis fan. My favourite songs are 'Suspicious Minds' and 'Always on my Mind'. Infact I love all the ballads! I was brought up with Elvis loving parents. I definitely recommend a visit to Gracelands - my parents have been once and have planned another trip there next year. I would love to visit too one day!

You bet your blue suede shoes I do Snoopy.

I hope you manage to get your tickets and have a 'swell' night out.

Hi Snoopy. Elvis became my favourite singer the moment I first

heard his wonderful voice. There isn't enough room on this page

for all my thoughts and love for this fabulous man. I have dozens

of CDs and many videos of him and I continually play his music

on my Ipod. I remember my Mum saying when I was sixteen "turn

that music down" and pretended not to hear her. He always was and

always will be my Idol. My favourite songs were It's Now or Never,

Are you Lonesome tonight and Wooden Heart. Ah those were the days!!

Hooray Sabre's back. Hope you enjoyed your hols and didn't boil in your caravan. You were lucky/unlucky with the weather if indeed you do like lots of sun.

Aah yes Elvis those were the days for sure.

For all those Elvis fans especially Snoops and fruity. I received a beautiful DVD as a surprise from one of my friends today as she knows I'm crazy about Elvis and always have been since a young teenager when we both worked together and talked non stop about him in our coffee breaks, of course. The DVD is "The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley - He touched me" It's absolutely lovely and very different from a lot of what he sang.

Sabre, one of my favourite Elvis cds is 'Elvis Ultimate Gospel', some of the songs make the hairs on the back of your neck stick up! I'm not religious, but Elvis was, and he sings them as they should be sung, amazing for a white guy! :-)

Thanks fruity I will get the cd ordered as I'm really delighted with the "He touched me" Gospel DVDs

It's so interesting to here everybody's comments! Some hardcore fans here for sure! I loved Elvis's films I was very young and used to think how handsome he was then and I still do! I love suspicious minds and are you lonesome tonight but his films he was just so cool!

Oh it's Elvis birthday celebration weekend and sad to say the shopping channels are full of tat trying to coax the hardened Elvis fans to spend money on it. But I did see several clips of him on stage over the weekend and I have to say that this guy had something totally special.

I would love to visit Gracelands this year and may well just throw caution to the wind and do just that ... may even advertise an Elvis loving travelling companion! But saying that, Lisa Marie Presley lives right bank in the middle of my working manor, Rotherfield in East Sussex, and I keep hoping to rub shoulders. I am told by local folk that she is seen out and about and that it is her devotion to Scientology that brought her to rest in this part of the world.

And as for favourite Elvis tracks ...

Twenty days and twenty nights ...

It's Midnight ...

Pledging My Love ...

Memories.
