It's official! The results of a YouGov poll this week showed that 33% of Brits love it, 33% hate it and the rest don't feel strongly either way! What am I talking about? Marmite of course!
So, which side are you on??
I love it! Whenever I've lived abroad, I've had to have it sent out to me. I can't possibly live without it, so tell...do you go 'Yummy!' or 'Yuck!' when confronted with the brown stuff?!
Luuurve it Fruity, thinly spread on my soldiers in the morning, yum.
I know when we were stationed in Cyprus during the mid eighties I also mourned the loss of Marmite, Bisto and Walkers Crisps plus one or two other incidentals.
Marmite soldiers Lillie??...now you're talking.
Me? 'Yummy', 'Yummy', 'Yummy'....cheese on toast with a splattering of the stuff on top, then under the grill with it.
A good dollop in a rich stew....
The uses are endlesssssssssssssssssssss.
Anyone remember the 'marmite vaseline'?
Apparently just an 'April fool' and i was quite looking forward to a good old rub down!
Lol ahab, Marmite Vaseline the thought of it brings tears to my eyes.
Yes, ahab, I sneak Marmite into stews, casseroles etc, and grilled cheese on toast just has to have Marmite on it! :-)
Well I have to say I've been brought up with it and as a kid we always used to have it on toasty fingers on Christmas morning. Very festive! So it has fond memories and I still love it to this day. It's kind of a comfort food for me, and a snack is hot buttered toast or even buttered fresh bread with the stuff plastered on.
I used to know this woman who insisted on smearing it all over her body as foreplay .... it was like making love to a twiglet.
Just as well my brother never met your ladyfriend, Snoops, when he and I were kids I only had to take the top of the Marmite jar and he would run out of the room screaming! He hated it! :-)
Lol Snoopy, hubby loves Twiglets but I really don't fancy daubing myself in the stuff. Can you imagine the stains, oh my word noooo.
Ah, Snoops, I've been missing your insightful comments for a couple of days!!!!
I've never made love to a Twiglet.... :D
Love it - but just try getting a Frenchman (or other European for that matter) to taste it! He he!
Australians have Vegemite which is similar and causes as many love/hate reactions.
I've tried Vegemite, it's similar, but not a patch on good old Marmite!
I occasionally work with a Frenchman, hmm, I must try it out on him! :-)
Try it on the Frenchman??...might be an idea Fruitcake!.. to get him to try the Marmite while he's around..he! he!
Well, he is a very handsome Frenchman, ahab! ;-)
Erm, well Marmite goes with cheese, but I'm not sure it'd work as a condiment to cannibalism, Fruits...
Don't knock it till you've tried it, G-Man! ;-)
Hate it but my kids love it. But that's just life, isn't it?
It is, wojtek, my dad and I loved it, my brother and my mum wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!
I believe that Marmite is banned in Denmark because it contains too many vitamins!
Lol, Sidesalad, I wouldn't be surprised! :-)
I read that - too high in B vitamins, apparently!
Hi miss fruitcake, yes I love it, but I read somewhere that it has a lot of salt that causes high blood pressure. Is that true? I mean is it true that Marmite has a lot of salt?
Yes Indogirl, Marmite is very high in salt (which can contribute to high blood pressure) at 11g per 100g of product, so you should spread it thinly and check the overall salt content of your diet.
I believe that 4g is the recommended use level for a slice of toast which gives you 0.44g of salt.
Marmite labels declare sodium levels which is misleading and disguises the high salt content.
Thank you miss sidesalad - I think I'll only have Marmite once a week!
Once a week Indogirl?????
Thats 'enough' to send the blood pressure up!!!!!!!!
Now wheres that Marmy??
I have very low blood pressure, Sidesalad, if I stand up too quick I fall over! Whenever my BP's taken they always take it again, because they think it's a mistake. So...lots of Marmite for me!! :-)
I'm the same fruitcake..and you spread marmite so thinly I dont think salt levels are too much of a worry..I'm one of those weird people who can take it or leave it..have to be in the right mood..........
sorry to be a pooper, but HP sauce is my favourite!
Oh, yes, ClearCash, HP brown sauce is the only sauce I ever eat! :-)
As a former student, I can say that HP sarnies make a cheap and tasty lunch :)
Love it, and so does Mr F. It's the one thing we take with us on holiday in France - sorry, apart from the proper teabags - as it's totally delicious on a fresh baguette in the morning.
Tried Vegemite in Aus and, compared with Marmite, I thought it had the texture of axle grease.
Axle grease, Feline...good description of the stuff! Vegemite does have an odd texture!
So right about Marmite on baguette for breakfast!
The 'Love it's' are winning so far, but I couldn't resist posting this fab ad...

RIP the truly wonderful Roy Skelton!
Yummy!
I'm currently eating a marmite and cheese sandwich for lunch. It's as close to a vegetarian meal as I get :)
Double yummy there, G-Man...Marmite and cheese! :-)
Yum Yum Yum Yum Yum......etc.
Have you tried a thin spread of Marmite under the cheese on your cheese on toast?
Or on top? On top's best. Err...did I mean to say that?! :-)
A *thin* spread Feline??? The more the merrier when it comes to Marmite I say!
With you on that, G-Man! I've been known to eat it straight out of the jar... :-)
I like the fact that only 33% love it. More for me.
I love Marmite now - hated it as a child. I think the only reason I started liking it is because when I went to Uni I had to get my B vitamins cheaply! Vegemite ok, definitely nowhere near as good as marmite!
vegemite is poor imitation as far as I'm concerned..and uni is where I got a taste for it too..lasted for ages so saw it as an economy!
Totally agree on the Vegemite, Lana! :-)
I love it on toast Fruity. I've always eaten it since being young and it
has such a unique taste. Very yummy
Oh dear. I'm neither a Love-It or a Hate-it. I wouldn't rave about marmite, then again I don't dislike it either.
Agree with you wendlew although I do like Bovril thinly spread on toast with scrambled egg on top. I suppose, in the absence of Bovril, Marmite would do.
Hate it! Blurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! ;-)
i don't love it ,and i don't hate it either ! feel like my life ,it is a glass of plain water ! no surprise ,but everything is in its way !
Yum on cheese on toast!
i have never tried it to be perfectly honest! but i would like to try it! what does it taste of?
Impossible to describe, MissS, it's a bit salty and just tastes of Marmite! :-)
oh! i don't like salt, i trry to avoid whenever possible, when cooking its ok but when your sitting down and about to have your meal and salt is standing there i don't go for it
I don't add salt to any of my food when cooking or eating, except on chips, which I only eat very occasionally, and I love Marmite! But it does have a salty flavour, so you may not like it.
Trying to describe the taste of Marmite is difficult as it is unique. I think Fruitcake has done it very well except that I would have said, 'very salty'!
i don't know if its weird or nt, but you know whenever you have a cut on your lips and you have salt and vinegar crisps? and you get a sting? i love that feeling lolz, i don't like it in the moment but after i like it lolz xx
Yep, that's weird, MissS! ;-)
I'll have a go and say it has a yeasty tinge similar to Twiglets if you've ever tried those.
Lillie reminds me of Mr Bean taking (real) twigs and spreading them with Marmite for his party!
are twiglits like pretzel? if so then ewwww! lolz
Belive it or not i've never tried it as i don't like the look of the jar it looks like black tar! I don't fancy putting it in my mouth. Does not appeal to me... Is it good for you is it nutritional???
It's good for you and nutritional, Serena, it's 100% vegetarian and has lots of B vitamins in it.
Here's a list of its ingredients...yeast extract, salt, vegetable extract, niacin, thiamin, spice extracts (contains celery), riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B12. I copied that off the jar! :-)
Try it spread thinly on warm toast! You'll either love it or hate it!:-)
Can understand that, but don't judge a book by its cover - its yummy and its good for you, and a little goes a long way :)
I'm another one in the Love It camp. With cheese on toast it's even better.
Would rather eat my own foot.
Just awful. Why torture your tastebuds?
Lol, wojtek! It really is a 'love' or 'hate' thing, isn't it... :-)
that made me laugh Wojtek!
Made me laugh too!
I LOVE it!!!
Yay, NTB, another yes! :-)
This subject has certainly had a lot of responses Fruity.
Was just thinking that, Sabre, certainly seems to prove the YouGov results as well! :-)

Just to add to the discussion on Marmite according to the news this morning a tanker carrying more than 20 tonnes of yeast extract believed to be marmite overturned on the MI in South Yorkshire. A big clean up operation is on the way. Can you imagine all that marmite flooding onto the motorway. Those who like it better get down there with their jars for a "fill up" (free).
Was it on the Yeastbound carriageway, Sabre?
OK, I'll go now.
LOL, Feline! :-))
Sabre:Some people will love this news, others will hate it..........
I suppose it caused a Marmite jam.
And the driver is probably toast!
I absolutely LOVE it! I sometimes just eat it by itself out of the jar. I think I like it best on crumpets. When I was a kid I used to eat marmite and marmalade together on toast. Sounds disgusting I know, but don't knock it until you've tried it.
Horrible, horrible, horrible yuck!

Know exactly what you mean, Lillie, the NAAFI would get Marmite, British teabags, Oxo cubes etc in, and the place would be seething with everyone fighting over them before they ran out! Tea was rationed in Germany and some other places.
In the US and in some other places, you couldn't get Marmite, my dad used to send parcels of it out to me!
Aah yes the parcels from home Fruity, we used to open them like scavengers, the contents lasted all of a few days.
Another fave was hubby's razor blades, they had to be just the right type. he used to cut himself to ribbons using the different/cheaper brands.
I used to love the USAAF PX's though...everything was sooo cheap compared to the rip off NAAFI! I still have my AAFES towels...they were superb quality!
