Could Britain go it alone?

by , 8 months ago

Many euro-sceptics are claiming victory in their prediction of 12 years ago, when they said the euro currency would be a disaster and fail in the longer term.

Given what is continually happening in the euro zone and especially in Greece, where other European countries (including Britain) are having to make statements in support of Greece and global economies and banks are underpinning their finances. Are the the sceptics right in their smugness?

There is a debate that Britain should withdraw from Europe altogether and go it alone. Such a move would permit us to take greater control of our own destiny and reinvest in the UK economy the many billions we spend and send into the european financial blackhole.

If Britain were to go it alone, what would people see as the plusses and minuses of this action?

Hi Parchester.

I for one would agree for Britain to go it alone.

In our business we seem to be bogged down with the effects of European Union laws and and regulations.

This would be a good miss...

Heavens knows how much this has already cost us.

Pull the plug thats what i say....

Neither of the mainstream party leaders have the political guts to even comtemplate even the idea of the UK separating from the EU but continuing to trade with the countries within. But just look at Switzerland, a small and affluent country which has always rejected the invitations to join the European Commission and actually went through a referendum. This country has never suffered from never being within the EU and can still trade and remain affluent without it.The UK can go it alone but sadly NEVER will leave the EU.

I tend to agree here with both CS and ahab!

WE done alright with the commonwealth before ever the euro zone was even contemplated. So I suppose it is possible but yet again all those so called euro MPs how did we ever manage without them.Oh I remember we saved a fortune by not having to pay them salaries, allowances, and most of all inflated expense claims.

The problem is that we are where we are now, that is to say we no longer have the links with the old Commonwealth and we are deeply linked to Europe. To extricate ourselves now would be extremely difficult and costly. We are not the country that we were 50 years ago - we have no work ethic, our education standards are appalling and we have only small manufacturing and farming industries left. Our high-tech and banking industries once revered are not what they were and I dread to think what the government would come up with in the way of taxation if we did not have the backing of the wider European grouping.
Some may fear that the Greek crisis is going to take us further into recession along with our European partners, but we cannot jump ship now or we will drown.

Very appropriate Parchester..drown we may 'on board'
or not..

Much as I might dislike the EU, I think we're much too far down the road to think of dismantling it, or Britain withdrawing.

I completely agree with Sidesalad - we are where we are.

It will be interesting to see what Scotland does re the EU, if the SNP get their way and Scotland gains full independence. Scotland has always had a very strong connection to Europe in its pre UK history.
