Legend in your own lifetime

I see Fruiters has already reached that goal.

But seriously how would you accomplish this in your own way?

Oh, Omen, I want to be the first female ever to win the Dakar Rally (the Paris Dakar as was!) on a motorbike!

The German, Jutta Kleinschmidt, was the first woman ever to win the Dakar in 2001, but she did it in a car, a Mitsubishi Pajero.

My Dakar hero was the Italian rider Fabrizio Meoni, who won it twice on his KTM, but tragically died in 2005 while competing again at what was to be his last attempt at the Dakar at the age of 48! He was sheer poetry in motion riding through the sand dunes of Africa, and I fully admit I cried buckets of tears when they found him dead by his bike in the sand.

It's the most exciting race ever in the world, and it makes GP racing look like child's play!

The only way to stand a chance of accomplishing it is to be rich, be sponsored by BMW or KTM, be incredibly fit, and have absolutely no fear of death, injury or gun toting bandits whatsoever! I'm working on it! ;-)

You go girl, now that is one heck of an ambition Fruity.
I wish you well with this one and should your dream come to fruition I'll be waiting on that finish line with the old Champers.... yay..

by LILLIE, 8 months ago

Wow you are my hero¬ine
>;o)

How did he die?
Crash or thirst?

by Omendata, 8 months ago

If only, Lillie! I could cope with the gun toting bandits, it's the fitness and the funding that's the hard part!

Thank you, Omen, you are so sweet! Fabrizio's story was so sad, he came back out of retirement to do one more attempt, which was to be his last before retiring for good, but he did so well against guys much younger than him, he decided to have one last attempt in 2005.

He was way out ahead of the others, riding through the desert by himself, it's incredibly gruelling and he had a heart attack. When he didn't turn up at the rest camp, they went out looking for him, and found him several days later slumped a few yards from his motorbike, dead. He was so admired, respected and loved, the organisers stopped the rally for a whole 24 hours as a mark of respect, something they don't ever normally do.

Wow - what an ambition Fruitcake! I know people that have been to watch the event and come back exhausted, let alone enter for it! I also know someone that has been part of the back-up for one of the car teams and he said that it is very exciting but totally exhausting. You certainly need to be rich to do that event - or to have the backing of a big company.

by Sidesalad, 8 months ago

Yes, Sidesalad, it's the most gruelling and exciting race on the planet. Anyone who even attempts it is probably crazy!

I've met two of the bike competitors, both really great guys, one of them gave me loads of advice and a lump of Dakar mud from his bike... :-)

Well, I'm already a legend in my own lunchtime in my local pub!

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Rightly so, Feline! :-)

Hmm.

Thinking literarily and not literally I think I'd have to rely on becoming the last man left in a world of vampires.

(Thanks for the idea, Mr. Richard Matheson)

Shall we just call you Omega-Man there Charlton!
;o)

Too right you shall!

You'll need to prise that title from my cold, dead hand :)

Hi mister omen I liked this question and discussed it with my family and my uncle says that every person has at least one moment in their life when they do something or achieve something that makes them feel very famous. He says that this is because they did something at that moment that was much better than everyone else but it was only at that instant in time. He says its usually only for a short moment, because after that someone else will do that thing (whatever it is) better than them. But whatever, for that moment they were the best!

So far that has not happened to me but I believe that it might . Do you agree?

by indogirl, 8 months ago

Was your uncle Andy Warhol by any chance?!

by fruitcake, 8 months ago

I was teasing you, indogirl, and the shortness of the 15 minutes was precisely Andy Warhol's point!:-)

by fruitcake, 8 months ago

Nevertheless miss fruitcake isn't this a good point to debate based on mister omen's question? I hope other's will contribute ?

by indogirl, 8 months ago

Yes, it is, indogirl, and I agree with both Mr Warhol and your uncle! :-)

by fruitcake, 8 months ago

Yes indeedy I have had a few 15 minutes here and there.

In all honesty people these days are desperate for their moment of fame that they will sink low and do virtually anything for that fleeting 15 minutes , days , weeks but in the end its all rather sad this celebrity culture - most of those who are desperate are of the lower elements - you rarely find people of real intelligence, class and style would do anything remotely like that.

I like to live in the days of style and savoire faire where women like Lauren Bacall were admired for their brains and class not how big their assets are or how many times they got them out for the lads - so sad that our human race is descending the ladder of retro-grade evolution.

They say that how Atlantis sank without a trace , Greece , Rome and the Egyptians - I guess its all cyclic and we are next!!!

by Omendata, 8 months ago

hi mister omen . Can you say what your 15 minutes of fame was for? I mean was it something that you had tried for and you expected or was it a surprise for you? I think the unexpected moments of glory should be more memorable - is that true?

by indogirl, 8 months ago

Oh I was on wheel of fortune and a few other things purely to make money none of that fame nonsense.

One thing I learned is that going on reality shows you can actually do more harm than good to your reputation in fact you could ruin your life!

I hear stories of Xfactor wannabes committing suicide because they cant handle the pressure of being under the limelight and then cast to the four winds!
Sad sacs all!
