The very recent email says that "BT Internet has been unable to process your most recent payment of bill" (the poor grammar is one clue this isn't genuine). It goes on to say that you need to confirm and update your billing information (that old trick blah blah blah) on their website in order to fix the problem.
Of course, the website you go to is a fake one, although it looks pretty genuine, albeit completely different to the real BT website. One of the clues is the spelling error of custumerservice not customerswervice.
You enter your BT username and password and it takes you to the next page where you enter your billing information, including your address and bank details. Do NOT engage with this email or touch it with a bargepole! you can expect to see your money disappear if you do.
Good heads up there, CS.
I'd like to think that none of our members would be that stupid, but it never hurts to be reminded!
I haven't come across it yet CS but thanks for the warning.
It sounds a fairly unsophisticated scam though don't you think?
Thanks for the warning - I am with BT but haven't had one of those emails yet. People may not be stupid when opening these emails, but if you are tired or distracted mistakes are easily made.
Thanks, CS. I'm not with BT, but it always helps to know of these scams. I agree that the spelling and grammatical mistakes are very useful pointers that this sort of email is a scam, but I do wonder how many of the elderly, partially sighted or those for whom English is not their first language, get caught out by these emails.
