The above is a direct quote from David Cameron, when he made a specific speech regarding immigration.
Since making this speech he has presided over a government that has made many pledges but has failed to deliver on a range of policies.
Talk is cheap but the inaction of the government to act upon their manifesto policies is costing this country dearly.
Net migration to the UK has risen by more than 20% last year to 239,000, going against the Government's pledge to reduce it.
A record number of people have been granted settlement in the UK in the last year, partly due to the number of people being allowed to stay as a backlog of asylum cases were cleared.
The financial deficit has also increased with government borrowing up by £25 million per day.
It would appear that, once again, Cameron and his ministers are all talk and no action.
The BNP and the EDL don't have to do anything when all governments assist them in their propagandist message and the ONS confirms their assertions.
Are the environmentalists missing a trick here? Shouldn't they attach wind turbines to all politician's to generate something useful from all the wasted hot air they expound in promoting their broken promises?
Lol Parchester, I'm sure they could power the whole of the UK and then some.
When will those blighters realise we are but an island and a sinking one at that.
The infrastructure is crumbling faster than ever, surely they can see this.
It'll be interesting to hear Omendatas' latest viewpoint on this one.....
Ooh I need a gin!!!
They act on securing their own pensions and benefits which we pay for whilst wanting to cut the benefits of the people who realy need assistance.Along with the dodgy expense claims they are fine at the art of self indulgance and preservation.
There is little evidence that politician act on their words. Just reflect over the years on the thousands of U-turns on manifestos (so -called election pledges) from all mainstream parties (including the Lib-Dems on tuition fees as they are now in government.
They talk at us and act in their own interests..... and there's loads of evidence to back this up!
To me those in power are looking after numero uno, just look at what a number of them have done with their expenses at our expense which we will never see again, and thankfully those who have acted outside of the law are paying in other ways. I feel most politicans at the top do not listen to the people of this country and they know how we all feel about certain situations. I have noticed in my home town over the last few years what immigration has done to a lovely town.
Most of the politicians are not satisfied representing their constituants they want to rule them untill this attitude alters and the inflated expense claims stop they will not be trusted by most people in the UK this is a status that they have managed to achieve mainly due to greed and self indulgance.
What is interesting and appears to be emrging from these replies is how disengaged the electorate are from those whom are elected to represent them.
There is a major concern amongst politician's that people don't engage in the political process, especially at the time of the election. However, it seems that it is the politicians who are resposnsible for this apathy and general malaise and yet they are the same people who are encharged in correcting and improving this situation.
Why would they want to alter the situation when it is the same system that promotes them to their comfortable, expensive and exclusive lifestyle?
To get the general electorate to engage in the process could well threaten their personal status quo!
Turkey's voting for Christmas - anyone?
You make some excellent points here, Parchester.
It simply seems that the current ( and preceding ) governments remain spineless when it comes to addressing the concerns of the idigenous British people over immigration and how it is affecting this country. It's almost as if the government is far too sensitive to global opinion, and indeed to that of the masses that have already settled here, to actually be seen to be proactive in the matter.
For goodness sake, we are a small, overcrowded, almost bankrupt nation where we just seem to invite more and more people to join the melee. Britain is fast losing the title 'nation', indeed it is already blurred out of focus. You cannot even hoist a Union Jack anymore for fear of upsetting someone. I reckon the dead Spitfire pilots would turn in their graves in complete horror.
It's all very well stating that immigration brings talent, skills, cultural richness and people who pay taxes ... it also brings tremendous costs in British taxpayers money, the welfare bill, pressure on housing, pressure on jobs and often a reluctance to integrate with ease or even will.
The big question is what is the way forward? No one seems to recognise limits, no one seems to recognise the dangers and no one seems to want to recognise just how unhappy people are about it. It seems that people's opinions no longer matter, just the need to be a big hearted and magnanimous global player.
Another well expressed, thoughtful, thought-provoking and incisive response.
France recently made the Burkha illegal and unconstitutional. Did the world stop? Has the world rejected France. No!
They talked tough and carried through their promise. The majority won through and not the minorities, who appear to have enormous control over legislature in this country.
Worrying times indeed for the future identity of this nation.
You're so right, Parch, that the BNP and other extremists don't even have to do anything other than sit back and wait fot the main parties to do nothing.
How dare some hard working immigrant come here to take the job that some lazy British hoody refuses to do in favour of collecting my tax money in benefits. Shame!
Hi mike5 ... I know it's easy to be cynical here and you make a valid point. But please be assured that the British benefit system is a major attraction for immigrants as well. In fact, I understand that there is nothing to parallel it globally.
Yes absolutely the main reason for coming here - What makes me mad is the ethnic families especially those from Pakistan and India coming here with 5 to 10 kids - get a free house and live off the tax the majority of indigenous brits pay with no intention of ever getting a job except for perhaps working tax free in their uncles family corner shop.
I have for along time felt that we live in a bureaucracy using that word in the literal sense of government by officialdom.
Take Cameron's pledge to ease adoption policies. Today I was having lunch with, among others a magistrate and a voluntary welfare helper. I asked them if they thought that it was possible to change the mindset of the people who implement policy. After some discussion, including the need to come back to the original question, the conclusion was that, given the European Human Rights legislation the answer was no.
And its not just adoption policies either.
So in case you were wondering, what has my last comment got to do with immigration?
Currently immigration figures include European nationals over whom we have no controls. Logic would suggest that they should be excluded from the immigration figures although such a move would of course be most unpopular.
