In the news this week .... Dog Horror ( not for the queasy ... )

by , 8 months ago

The national press reported this week that a huge dog was stabbed ten times and thrown into a river with concrete blocks tied to its legs. Fishermen pulled the 12 stone 'dogue de Bordeaux' out of the water with a tractor. IT was not known if the dog was alive when it was thrown into the River Ouse at Chawston, Beds. A microchip revealed that the dog was aged 2 and called Angus. An RSPCA inspector stated 'We desperately need to know who is behind this'.

Does this not reinforce the case for urgent introduction of dog licences at cost, accompanied by compulsory chipping and a log book of ownership? And who agrees needs to be laws that you cannot buy, adopt or take possession of any dog without registering for an immediate licence, chipping and log book style ownership? This is murder, isn't it. I can only hope the full force of the law hits the responsible person for this. Out of interest, does anyone know if chipping confirms ownership?

I don't have to ask for views on this as I know we're all animal lovers and you'll all want to chip in.

I wish I could get my hands on the person/persons who did this to that poor dog. It must have been terrified out of it's head. I'd like to stab them ten times and put concrete blocks on their legs and chuck them into the river and see how they like it. Fancy breeding scum like that the heartless b.....ds. I continue to wonder what our world is coming to.

Agreed Sabre. As I said, this is on a par with murder and a dog deserves as much protection as humans. Can't say the same applies to the perpetrator of this crime though.

I'm surprised that the microchip doesn't contain more information than age and name.

This appears to be a missed opportunity to ensure that if the dog was lost the owners details would be recorded on the chip.

I sincerely hope that the criminal who did this is caught and dealt with accordingly.

Agreed Parchester. This is one event where, if proven beyond reasonable doubt, a custodial sentence would be correct and commended by everyone.

I thought when Sam was chipped that the number given when scanned would then be matched with the owner's name and address on the files at the Vet's including Sam's! I thought I had seen this on the television when they were looking for the owner's of animals found in the Streets which sometimes have strayed away from home.

It's not very often I'm lost for words Snoopy but stories like this leave me dumbfounded.

I've found an article re your 'chip' query and it would seem this process is not without it's problems.

Scroll down to (24-25) it may interest you.

Interesting article about the 'chip' situation Lillie. You would just have thought that they were routine without further comment or dangers but apparently not so. And it seems that retrieval of ownership details is not guaranteed, as per the story in question. Nothing to stop full details being carried on a collar of course and to make this mandatory and an enforceable event. I think this country is far too soft on recording dog ownership, particularly when it comes to sheep worrying, attacks on people and animal cruelty. So it shouldn't be dependent on chipping, agreed, but there are other ways.

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

I really can't find words strong enough to express my disgust at this, and I totally agree that there should be compulsory licensing, chipping, and identification of owners. The log book of ownership should also be introduced, and it should be an offence not to update the details when an animal changes hands, just as it is when you sell a car.

I'm surprised the dog's chip only revealed its name and age. A couple of years ago, we called in Cats' Protection to trap a cat that had been terrorising our cats and spraying in my utility room - lovely! We had assumed it was a stray or a feral, but when CP scanned it, its chip revealed it was owned by somebody about half a mile away, and had been straying because the irresponsible owner refused to have it neutered.

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Good comments Feline. Noted your last paragraph ... and if you think about it, a lot of men would not have strayed had their wives agreed to have them neutered! Or should that be the other way round?

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

It might well have stopped the men straying, Snoops, but surely the wives of neutered husbands would be straying in droves! ;-)

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Ha! Depends on how you define 'neutered' I suppose Feline. Does that mean 'removal of equipment' or 'disabling the equipment' ( like putting blanks in a pistol )? Are you talking from experience?

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

There are certain questions a gentleman doesn't ask, but then again it is you asking, Snoops! :-)

I think it would have to mean 'removal' as surely just putting blanks in would not stop the straying?

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Thank you Feline, that's very magnaminous of you. Don't know why, but I keep thinking about pickled onions ....

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

The only person I kew who kept thinking about pickled onions was my sister when she was pregnant.

Is there something you'd like to share with us, Snoops?!

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Sorry, Feline, I'm not feeling myself today ...

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

So, Snoops, are you feeling someone else?

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Ok right, who's feeling who here?

by LILLIE, 8 months ago

Actually feline .. ermm .. no. But as the man said to the blind harlot, "I've got to hand it to you' ...

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

I wish I knew, Lillie!

We can only wait for Snoops to reveal all.

by Feline123, 8 months ago

It's a joke Feline about pickled onions and firing blanks, or in the joke's case, not being able to fire at all .... would you like me to email it to you?

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

Yes please!

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Sadly, I expect that this type of action could be on the increase, as I recall reading that many people are abandoning their pets as the economic hardships hit home.

The statistical information, naturally, only relates to the animals that have been rescued and housed in charitable animal shelters. I wonder how many pets have met a more inhumane end to their lives because of diminishing household budgets?

by Parchester, 8 months ago

Absolutely Parchester ... that was something I was going to include but got carried away with the inhumanity of it all. I meet people everyday who cannot afford to pay rent or mortgage but persist in keeping horses and other costly animals. There is nothing worse than interviewing people who live long term on benefits and have a menagerie of animals at home. And while they may well be animal lovers, their view on vet fees is simply 'hope I never have to pay them' or 'meet that bridge when we come to it'. Having any animals must be viewed as a serious social responsibility.

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

I'm sure you're right, Parchester, and I know you are not putting this forward as an excuse for this disgusting behaviour.

I, and I'm sure most true animal lovers, would go without something if necessary to provide my cats with food and vet treatment. And if it really got so bad that I could no longer even do that, I would make sure they were rehomed or, at worst, humanely destroyed.

Just typing that has made me feel quite sick. I think I need a gin.

by Feline123, 8 months ago

Yes it's all very sad when it comes down to whether the pet stays or goes for monetary reasons and I'm sure this may well be on the increase but no true pet lover would resort to such criminal inhumane acts.
Pour me one too please Feline.....

by LILLIE, 8 months ago

Pouring it now, Sis - glug glug. Do you want ice and a slice with that?

by Feline123, 8 months ago

As it comes sister dear, cheers.....

by LILLIE, 8 months ago

I really hope they find out who did this - and I would like to spend some time alone with this 'person'

by Lana, 8 months ago

Couldn't agree more Lana ..... actually, if he/she is identified, then I think they should make front page on every national newspaper to name and shame as never before. Go you remember the woman that poped a cat into a wheely bin? She lost her job and got untold grief but her offence was minor compared to this.

by Snoopy48, 8 months ago

That woman disgusted me and I'm glad she got such bad press and lost her job - I know that sounds nasty but there is no excuse for that kind of behaviour

by Lana, 8 months ago

Surely the owner who chipped the dog wouldn't be stupid enough to kill the dog as it could be traced back to them?
