Recently my father-in-law went to renew his car tax but was unable to do so because the Insurance Company had inadvertently typed a wrong letter on his Insurance Certificate so he was unable to use his car when the car tax expired as the Insurance Company were a long time in issuing him another Certificate even after many 'phone calls. So beware, check your Insurance, it might be you next time.
That is just unforgivable incompetence, Sabre. We all pay a lot of money for these necessary things, and should be entitled to them being dealt with efficiently.
I hope your fil complains and gets some compensation.
On a slightly humorous note, when I bought my last new car and drove it home, I was so pleased with it that I went out to walk round it and stroke it. I noticed that the numberplate was wrong, and there was a 'V' where there should have been a 'Y'. I phoned the dealership and the salesman was here within 20 minutes to change the plates. Now that's what I call service.
Good reminder Sabre that it's always worth checking through any insurance paperwork very carefully, boring though it is. There is always going to be human error at some point so best to check it's not on your certificate.
Yes it always pays to check the details however small. I'm surprised it took so long to sort out.
Sounds like pure inefficiency to me.
Thanks for the reminder, Sabre, I'm about to renew mine in the next few weeks!
I think in your father-in-law's case, because of his advanced age, perhaps the insurance company should have offered him some compensation as a goodwill gesture. But, I must say, in general, I totally agree with Wendie that claims for compensation are getting ridiculous and costing us all more and more, and sadly that will include future costs for your father-in-law.
Yes although he is 90 years old he is extremely bright and people often think he is in his 70's. He has driven since his teens and was an HGV Driver for many year's. He has never had an accident and the only thing he has had is two speeding fines. Having said that he would never go for compensation as he is very principled - too much at times - but will certainly double check next year when his Insurance Certificate arrives. He actually took it very calmly when he could no longer use his car and waited patiently for the Insurance Company to send his Certificate which was halfway into the next month.
He sounds a grand chap, Sabre, and good on him for sticking to his principles! :-)

Agreed that these silly errors shouldn't happen and someone should check the papers before sending them out, but 'compensation' is a bit OTT. Life is full of inconveniences, some shouldn't happen but they do. Car Insurance premiums are outrageous already without the companies adding yet more on for compensation payments for silly errors.
