I know that there is a cap on such lottery winnings but who agrees that £161 million is an obscene amount of money to be rewarded for staking a couple of quid? Don't you think it's about time we set a limit of say 5 or 10 Million with the rest of the pot being spread through the ranks so that even the lowest prizes would be more welcome?
In any event, to win that kind of money is going to mean a lot will end up as death duties to HM Government unless he/she can spend it or simply give it away, even then the VAT returns would be enormous. And, as I have said before, don't you think that these kind of routes to achieve unimaginable riches like this lead to a 'plastic' society where people rest their weekly hopes on 'it could be you'?
Apparently this win will make this person richer than the Beckhams. And how would you deal with so much money in an instant? One thing is for sure, you could never lead a normal life after that!
What say you all?
NOTW headline -
BRIT wins £161M on Euro Millions
NOTW headline 10 years later -
BRIT who won £161M on Euro Millions 10 years ago checks into a Govt. backed rehab clinic to rid of drug & alcohol addiction after blowing the winnigs on wine, women & fast cars :-)
Oh damn - there is no NOTW any more :-) What has Rupert done to us?
Yeah, a cap of £10 million for top prize would be good.
But as for the question: "And how would you deal with so much money in an instant? One thing is for sure, you could never lead a normal life after that!"
Too right. I'd not lead a normal life.
I'd lead Charlie Sheen's.
:)
Oh to an early grave, eh G-Man? At least you'd die happy!
Yeah, hopefully with my boots off.
You'd probably get fed up after a while G-Man and come back into the real world again. Obviously you will have had a great adventure; something to remember always.
Wow Snoopy you could have a harem and "what a way to go".
Joking apart it's a vast amount and hopefully the person who has won the millions will, after treating their own family and friends, feel they can help all the millions in the world with their need's and perhaps help some of the hospitals, etc. with some of the equipment needed to help the really sick people. The money used right could help so many but there again it depends what the person winning it wants to do.
I love your headline Snoopy48, 'Brit Wins £161 on last night's Eurolottery!' it makes my winning £250 seem so much more exciting. Until you realise you've left the 'm' for millions off the figure!!
Actually Parchester, that was indeed an omission but everyone else has simply read through it ... just goes to show that people see what they want to see. But then there is always some pedantic, nit picking so and so to pick you up, isn't there? ( only joking, honest guv! )
Did you win £250 Parchester???
Congratulations to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a nice windfall for you, and so much easier to manage than all those millions ... imagine what a troublesome burden that would have been.
I got off lightly this month too, just £25 on Premium Bonds - Phew! What a relief :)
I love your wicked humour, Wendie! :-)
Well, ok, I was being a bit tongue in cheek about the millions, but I can't help but wonder just what would you actually do with all that dosh? There's not enough room under my bed to stash it all, there's not enough banks to spread it around at £85,000 per institution, I think there's some silly laws about giving money away to family and friends (end result being the tax man or government will swipe the dosh) ..... even the 3 metre long cheque they give you will be a damn nuisance. The whole caboodle is utterly impractial!
Naaaa ..... all that money is not for me, I prefer the simple life.
But my congrats to Parchester are heartfelt and genuine!
Oh, I could tell your congrats were genuine, Wendie, and congrats to you too on your Premium Bond win! :-)
Actually I also have a £125 win on the Premium Bonds!!
However, I think I would seriously like to be confronted with the option of having to spend £161m. After looking after my nearest and dearest, there are so many philanthropic projects I would like to do.
But as for all the trappings of wealth like fast cars, boats, too many houses spread all over the globe, I don't really see that as being of interest.
Ooh - we are a wealthy lot. I won £25 on the Premiuim Bonds this month and am trying to be sensible and not let it ruin my life. I have ticked the 'no publicity' option in case of begging letters (from my family!)
I'm keeping quiet! Too busy trying to work out what to spend my newly acquired £161 million on...
Fruitcake - don't forget, you're my very best friend...
But of course, Sidesalad! Lol!
According to the Internet news no-one has come forward and claimed the millions. Have you all looked under the bed, in your trouser pockets, etc. in case it's YOU.
The winner(s) have now come forward and are considering whether they want to go public or not.
Each day that they hadn't claimed they were losing £9500 in interest payments!
I see it's a middle-aged couple who have won. He did say he would buy his wife a new car but hadn't any plans for anything else. So it's back to your day job those who are working and it's back to skimping for those on their pension. Never mind good luck next time to everyone.
One thing I never do is to feel jealous or envious of the winners ..... the reason why is that we all have exactly the same chance and no skill is involved. And hey, we wouldn't have a dream to carry forward to next time, would we? Frankly I would be over the moon with £100K ... enough to retire early, buy a car of choice and go on a quest for a decent woman!
Ooh - I don't think that will last for long. Whatever they think, their lives will be changed forever with all sorts of rich persons problems. I would fear for kidnapping of the children, loosing friends and gaining false friendships, of begging letters and burglars and having to get used to the press trying to find some dirt in your past.
I wish them well but don't feel envious. Like Snoopy though, I wouldn't mind the odd £100k.
I agree. £100,000 would be plenty enough. I'm surprised these winners went public, their lives won't be their own ever again. The best of luck and congrats to them, but I'm quite glad it's them and not me!
I was surprised they went public too! They are going to be inundated with begging letters!
I think that they had to go public - somebody close to them would have told the press who they were at some point, so it was best to get that over with and maybe hide themselves away somewhere safe until the interest in them dies down.
But why continue to do the lottery? Haven't they got enough now?
I was more surprised when they said they would still do the lottery again. WHY?
I thought I had heard wrong last night but you have now confirmed they did say that lakes. Why indeed. Surely they can manage with what they have just won. Was it just a flippant remark I wonder? I'd be snuggled up in bed this morning with a cleaner doing all the work - my husband would, I know, prefer an au pair - not so likely, he can dream on. They also said they would be remaining in their home and not buying a new one!! Fair enough if you love your home and I must admit I don't think I would move from my lovely countryside home but what then would you do with all that money. Let's hope they put some of it to some good causes and enjoy the rest.
The jackpot winners have had to go in hiding either abroad or even in the Scottish Highlands to escape the begging letters. It hasn't taken long for their lives to change so I wonder if they will think it worth it in the end.
What a shame they were so "tickled pink" last week. What's the saying - what a difference a day makes, in this case a few days.

Very droll, Mr HSP ..... have you ever thought of writing a comedy script? Sort of Ian Hislop style?
Headline: Lottery winner names daughter Harper Onehundredandsixtyonemillion.
Hey, I can't think of anything better to spend it on than wine, women and fast cars.
Other than wine, women and more women.
G-man - I can, wine, cars in a colour that will look good with my outfit, and handbags.
...oh and maybe shoes too.
See, there you are .... with women it always comes down to shoes. With me, it's 0 to 60!
0 to 60 Snoops?
I tend to go 18 to 30.
Oh, hang on... You're talking *cars* aren't you...
G-Man - don't write off the more mature woman. She may be worth £161 million!
Actually G-Man, if your talking women, my chosen slot would have to be 40 to 50 'cos anything over that can be a bit rough. OMG, now I've done it .... wait for the proverbial to hit the fan!
Just revising my Christmas list now, Snoopy!
Actually Feline ... as we speak, I am revising my wish list to edge up to that gifted 62 slot now. I am told that there is a mass of undiscovered womanhood that only comes into bloom in the 60 to 62 range. And some of them actually have a beautiful sense of humour ..... that's why I love teasing certain people on here and 'bringing it on', so to speak.
For some reason that Elvis song 'You were on my mind' is running through m head .....
All you lucky people winning things. I've never won anything in my life.
Does it have anything to do withe the fact that I don't have any Premium Bonds & I don't buy the lottery tickets?
:-)
Oh, Snoopy, you silver-tongued charmer!
Do I need to say more!
Hey HSP, I guess you've got to be 'in it to win it'!
