I'm sitting in Stanstead airport waiting for my early evening flight to Madrid to go and collect my two grandchildren for their annual two week holiday.
It's hard to believe the country is going to the dogs as there seems to be more people than ever queueing up to check in.
Thankfully as I'm doing a back to back flight I can go straight through to departures as I only have a small overnight bag.
I swear if it wasn't for my grandchildren I wouldn't fly ever again as the whole process from airport parking through to the queues to flying itself I find abhorrent to say the least, still needs must and I have to go with the flow.
How about you, do you like to travel via our network of over congested and extremely expensive airports?
Hi Lillie
Hope all goes well with your visit to Madrid. It's a long time since I have flown as Hubby likes to stay in England (having been a Submariner in the Royal Navy) he says he has seen all the world for free and loves England the best. He's always encourages me to go with one of my friends. Would you think he wants rid of me?
I must say I used to hate all the queueing it's so tiring.
Have a good flight and a safe journey.
Thank you Sabre, I have to agree with your hubby.
Just about to have a large swig of your recommended tipple, it may help to lighten the load...aah that's better,I must be careful not to overdo it, I wouldn't want to get thrown out.
To be honest I love every aspect of going on holiday - yes, even the airport part. We get in the car with our cases, start the engine and that's it! Holiday starts right there and then. I find airports interesting and exciting places, I love people watching and plane watching. We've been delayed at Manchester airport several times and never even noticed because there's so much to see keeping us occupied. One eye on the screen ready for a Gate number, the other eye on the goings-on around us. I hope your trip goes well LILLIE.
What you're witnessing LILLIE are people fleeing this country. Spending any savings they have and enjoying life whilst they can before the onslaught of old age, so as when they become too infirm the state will have to intervene and offer them free care.
Quite right Parchester. We spend a life time saving for our old age and the wasters on benefits get everything subsidised or free - where is the logic in saving - then they take your house from you as well!!!
It appears Andrew Dilnot's excellent report into care for the elderly today suggests that those with less than £35,000 available to them should received state care. I know what I'm going to do with my savings and property. Blow the bloody lot before I reach 66 or will it be 68?
Go have a wild time Parchester, spend the lot on everything you desire - don't wait till you have to spend it all on your care - Enjoy yourself while you can.
I don't blame them Parchester, thanks.
Hi Lillie. Did you manage to stagger onto the plane after your G and T's.
Hope the flight was good and have a safe return one. Don't forget your duty free.
The gin sadly Sabre isn't much cheaper than the supermarkets.
I've experienced Ryanair gin. It comes in a little plastic sachet and you lose half of it when you nip the corner off. At least Difficultjet still give you a miniature bottle!
I had just the one in the airport Feline (honest) with ice and a slice, quite nice and refreshing.
I refuse to pay that dire airline a penny more, I would rather go without.
I HATE flying and everything about it.
My career was in the railway industry, so Mr F and I are fortunate to receive free travel by train in Britain and half price just about anywhere else. I was lucky enough to advance far enough up the career ladder to qualify for First Class travel and we have enjoyed many relaxing holidays by train all over the world.
There is absolutely no comparison between queuing for ages to sit in a space that would insult a battery hen while you a eat some plastic food out of a plastic tray, and sitting in a comfortable seat eating a nice meal with good wine before retiring to your en-suite sleeping berth to wake up next morning at your destination.
I like the sound of first class train travel Feline.
You're quite right about being couped up and being fed and watered no better than a prisoner,it was a ghastly experience.
Lillie - you cannot even have a free glass of water on Ryanair.
Feline - At the time of the travel chaos when the 'liquid' explosives were discovered I changed my cancelled Ryanair flight for that day to First Class on Eurostar. Wow - it was fab! Haven't been able to afford it since but would certainly do that again given the chance.
Hi Lillie.
I adore trains, especially steam ones. My late husband and I were founder members of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and spent many years doing voluntary work including helping to run the buffet carriage, doing lots of painting to the carriages and sometimes serving in the shop. We also tidied up the platform. Those were the days a lovely light relief from us both being stuck in Local Government offices all the week. Then the terrible two came along and I was unable to go as much but hubby still went. We always make the annual trip to see the station and ride on the train. There is a seat in memory of my late husband on the platform.
Now that's a much more romantic way to travel.
Talk about sisters, Sabre! My husband still volunteers sometimes for the Ffestiniog Railway where he used to be an engine driver before he grew up and got a proper job!
We still go back fom time to time to meet old friends.
Well I'm back on good old terra firma and ensconced on my sofa with a lovey cup of tea, bliss.
The littlees are playing swingball in the garden (I wish I had a quarter of their energy).
We flew by Ryanair suffice it to say after the return trip in two weeks time ,'never again'.
They made Easyjet look like a luxury airline.
The delays added up to two and a quarter hours which seemed like a lifetime as in order to get more bums on seats the wretched seats don't recline at all and stay in the bolt upright position, quite dreadful.
So we will venture further afield to Luton next year and travel with EJ.
I won't depress you any further by telling you the cost of food and drink at the airport or on the plane, but take my advice take your own sandwiches and drinks, you'll save a fortune.
Oh it's good to be home, I just hope I can recoup my lost energy and give these two a good holiday as we've lots to do and see during the next fortnight.
Hi Lillie you sound as if you have had quite an ordeal.
Enjoy your time with the little ones and don't get too exhausted. Perhaps you will win the lottery and go first class next year - you never know what's in store for you. I expect you'll need your G and T later on.
I'm just glad phase one is over Sabre, phase two is worse because that's when it gets all teary when they have to return home.
I'm happy to do it while I still have my health and time but I do look forward to the day when they can travel on their own but that's a few years away yet.
Ooooh Lillie - Ryanair grrr. Travelling with them tomorrow and have just booked 2 return tickets for August that had a basic price of £113 but with no booked bags or priority check-in came to £164 by the time all of the 'extras' were added. The thing is, it's still a cheap way to travel at that time of year but the flight times are horrendously early and I shall be in a bad mood for at least a day after each trip! Please send gin!
Gin's on it's way sidesalad, you'll need it.
Hopefully you're not travelling for more than a couple of hours as those seats are diabolical.
Enjoy yourself Sidesalad and I hope your journey is better than you are anticipating. You'll soon forget the journey when the sun comes out.
Sounds awful! I've not flown for years... To much waiting around, seats too cramped and air traffic controllers far too strikey.
