My poinsettia

by , 11 months ago

I purchased a poinsettia at the beginning of December and it is still in bright red leaf with many of the green leaves as well. It's beautiful and looks as if it will last until next Christmas. I have had one most Christmas's but never one that has lasted this long.
Has anyone else still got there's - Sabre
p.s. a good buy at £1.97

Isn't it amazing what pleasure £1.97 can bring Sabre?

But here's a theory for you .... I believe that house plants can sense the spirit in the house and react accordingly. That suggests that you've had a settled and happy existence for the last 6 months at least and the plant simply picks up on that positive energy.

They also say that if you touch the plant's leaves regularly and talk to it, it enhances its wellbeing and longlevity. Are you touchy feely with your plant?

Of course some may say this is rubbish but I do believe that plants thrive in a positive energy charged atmosphere!

Yes Snoopy I do talk to my plant and say how beautiful it is every day. It looks a bit odd with all my summer plants but it's so lovely it will stay on the window cill until the end. Can't say the last six month's have been very good as my husband is undergoing treatment at the moment. But perhaps when this is over it will be a happy place again and we can celebrate his good health again. Don't get me wrong we are devoted and happy - Sabre

Then the plant is clearly supporting your positive attitude Sabre. I truly wish your hubby a speedy recovery and good health.

My late wife was the plant lover and gardener in this house, I never had the enthusiasm. But since she passed away in December 2008, every plant in this house seems to thrive .. I like to think in honour of her.

And a Poinsettia is on my shopping list this Xmas now!

Hi Snoopy - Hubby doing ok but has many week's treatment yet; finishes 18 July so many more day's to go. We both love our garden and plants and this year as we are unable to go away we have spent a fortune on hanging baskets and tub plants and we are being well rewarded with a wonderful display of colour. Also we have about 17 bird boxes, bee house, butterfly house, hedgehog house bug logs etc. home made so we spend lots of time watching the birds, etc. My husband makes the majority of the fat balls and is regularly boiling everything up in the kitchen - a small price for the appreciation the birds show, lining up everyday in droves for their breakfast. Very sorry you have lost your wife, life becomes very lonely - been there before. But I found having plenty of hobbies and a loving family helped enormously. Glad you are thinking of buying a Poinsettia next Xmas. Keep it out of a draft, water two or three times a week and keep on kitchen window cill and good luck. Sabre

Just to let you know my poinsettia is still going strong. Got lots of red leaves and the green are still healthy. Want to put some summer flowers on the window cill but don't feel able to remove this one as it's given me so much pleasure - doesn't take much before there are any rude comments.

I bought mine in early December too Sabre but sadly it isn't doing as well as yours, it's starting to look a little jaded now.

Perhaps I should sing it a Christmas Carol and see what happens, but that will probably finish the poor thing off completely, I'll keep you posted.

Hi Sabre, well done you! You must have green fingers. I can't keep any plant alive, so I don't have them anymore. I've even managed to kill several cacti...and they're supposed to be almost impossible to kill! :-(

by fruitcake, 11 months ago

I still have mine. The leaves won't stay red much longer. If you want red leaves fornext christmas you will have to buy expensive lights as they need 12 hours daylight and 12 hours darkness for about 6 weeks, At £1.97 it is cheaper tobuy a new one for the colour next year,

by andrea35, 11 months ago

Wow you must have really green fingers Sabre and what a bargain. I didn't get one this year and regretted it as they are gorgeous flowers.

by LittlePiskey, 11 months ago

Thought I'd let you know the update on my poinsettia. A very sad
day today as the last red leaf has dropped off. The green is in
great abundance and is a really lovely colour and the plant itself
still looks super so it will remain on the windowsill even if it
doesn't have any red leaves this year as I think that after eleven month's of pleasure it deserves to stay in place.

Mine went the way of all good things awhile ago now.
Yours has done very well.
Won't be long before the next lot are in the shops.

by LILLIE, 7 months ago

I had a similar one years ago, Sabre. I kept it and it didn't turn red again but I still enjoyed it when it was green.

by Feline123, 7 months ago

Sabre - You can get it to produce red bracts for Christmas but you have to start now. If you did not hear it this weekend, listen to BBC Gardeners Question Time where they visit a poinsettia grower in Bucks. There is a link to listen again here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b015ctwg
I have had a poinsettia that produced red bracts for two years by leaving it in a coolish room that was not often used so it got
even(ish) amounts of light and dark.
Good luck!

Hi folks - my poinsettia bless it is now showing red leaves again and having already had 11 month's of pleasure from it already just proves that a £1.97 plant can give you so much pleasure.

Don't forget yours Snoopy as you said you would be buying one this year.

by Sabre, 5 months ago

That's excellent news Sabre. It will be interesting to see whether it lasts another year.

by Sidesalad, 5 months ago

Oh wow, I'm impressed Sabre, mine never last.. mind you, reading Snoopy's old post about it reflecting a happy settled existence, there might be a good reason for my failure !

by Jazzj, 5 months ago

My poinsettia is also still alive. The leaves have a slight reddy tint but are now quite small but very healthy

by andrea35, 4 months ago

Ought to add here that my 35 year old Christmas cactus is in full bloom now.

by andrea35, 4 months ago

I've had more luck with them, mine's about twenty years old, but doesb't bloom until about March

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Your poinsettia sounds very much like mine andrea. It is over a year old and is full of small leaves very pretty and lots of them have turned red now. It looks beautiful and I think it's even better with a small leaf.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Do they need to be kept warm Sabre? Mine never ever last but my house quite cool

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

I have mine on either the kitchen windowsill or the shower room windowsill. The plant is in the sun in the summer and the central heating in the winter. They hate draught of any description and can die from buying them to getting them home if you don't keep the draught off. I learn't this whilst working in a garden centre.

Cyclamen are all around this time of the year and these do not need much water as if you overwater them the leaves go a lighter colour then drop off. They also don't like to be in a draught.

Don't forget to give your plants some feed.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

That'll be it sabre - draughty old house and four children who don't shut doors, plus two cats that can open doors too..poor plants don't stand a chance!

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Mine is still going strong. The feeding must have helped as I have lots of red leaves now. A bit late for Christmas but a beautiful display anyway

by andrea35, 1 month ago

I had one that lasted for ages until the cat peed on it!

by Feline123, 1 month ago

Mine I think sadly is on it's way out now andrea. It has lasted 17 month's including two Christmas's and is now in the greenhouse. It still has lots of read leaves but no green ones. Mr S says I've killed it putting it in the greenhouse but it was starting to drop.

by Sabre, 1 month ago

Lol, Feline!!

Shame you don't live near to me, Sabre, I get given them as presents at Christmas sometimes, and I always give them away, because if I don't they're dead within 2 weeks!

by fruitcake, 1 month ago

Mine don't last either Fruits!
