Personally i think we will never understand the Arab mentality and should leave them well alone.
Its like sticking a stick into an already annoyed wasps nest.
It can only be bad for the West to be seen starting yet another war.
Apart from the fact it seems that Gaddafi is right and many of the fighters egging the rebels are in fact Al Qaeda - so in effect we are playing right into their hands - you've got to admit it AQ are not exactly the stupid ragheads the politicians would have us believe - anyone who can crash two planes into the Twin Towers are not to be underestimated!
I guess tourism in the Middle-East will now be a bit of a nono unless you have a death wish.
And the fact tourism is Egypt and others sole source of income will be the double whammy!
Madness the world has gone completely mad!
Cameron - I think this will be remembered in future as a Bad Mistake!
We never seem to learn from the past - copying Blair is a grievous error!
Personally I think that any country that thinks it has a mandate to police the rest of the world has to either be inanely foolish or simply believe that what they are doing is for global security and nothing else.
I guess with the Americans leading the way and the French in support of their own African interests, the package may look mildly wholesome. But for goodness sake, you are talking about civil unrest, not to quell some invasion from another land. This is pretty much akin to Afghanistan and look how many British body bags have retured from that one.
We all suspect that oil may be at the centre of this action even though it is packaged as suppressing a tyrant for the sake of his people. And you are right, the Arab mentality is not for the West to think thay can take charge of.
And what about the Iranian atrocities that occur daily? Such as stoning women to death for adultery and hacking off hands for theft? Do we send the boys in to put a stop to that?
The British media is currently showing us pictures of British planes and ships being 'brave and heroic' in and around Libya but when the romance of advenure subsides, there is bound to be a big mess to deal with. After all, we are simply messing around in someone else's country.
It's the speed at which this has happened which has amazed me.
I recall the lengthy preamble before going into Iraq but the rapidity rightly or wrongly here I would hope hasn't been a decision made in haste.
I wonder what will happen in the aftermath, is it all going to end up in a lengthy and costly stalemate.
I feel a bit uneasy about this, Omen. I know it's legal, as Iraq wasn't, as they have a UN resolution behind them, but I'm still not sure.
I pray for a quick outcome with no unnecessary civilisn deaths.
I thought we were supposed to all tighten our belts and spend far less. No forecasts have been given to the public of how roughly how much this war will cost. So the budget deficit is unlikely to be cut heavily soon. Infact the reverse! They seem to find money to borrow for wars but not for public services.
Things as important as this should have been put to the people of Britain.
Politicians are "supposed" to represent the people but instead represent all the rich businessmen and oil companies,
Im beginning to think Al Qaeda may actually have a point - the West is becoming a very corrupt place and thats from the top down!
When the corruption comes from the top there is no place to go but to filter down and so the people just emulate their peers.
We shouldnt be blaming the poor for the crime its the rich who should be taken to book!
Omen, I respect your views on all matters and I often agree with you, but do you really think the great unwashed and uneducated Joe Public of this country are qualified to decide on these issues? After all, they are the ones who elect our pioliticians!
Whichever way you look at it, this appears another Iraq all over again. Having UN approval and 'sanctioning' does not, I suggest, make it right. It just makes it more complicated.
So Gadaffi gets killed, lynched or does a runner. What happens next? Is Libya going to become the land of democratic milk and honey? OD makes some good points ... the Arab mentality does not forgive and forget or be prepared to accept things at face value. There will remain hate within the country and that will spill over to the West. That's already been proven.
But I cannot say this would have been a decision for the country to make. We have to rely on our elected government, whether we like it or note. The press reports state that Cameron is calm and has the whole issue under political control, unlike Irag that too days of hedging issues. And then the papers are saying that the effectiveness of the 'mission may be crumbling. That's the last thing any of want to hear.
But it's like anything, pull out for fear of making things worse and you leave a vacuum filled with question marks and unresolved responsibility.
I agree to a certain extent Feline but the ones who would actually be bothered to vote i believe wouldnt be mr thicko unwashed as i doubt he could manage to make it to the polling station - he would rather be suping beer and smoking fags watching football in the local pub.
Anyway i think probably he would have a greater idea of what living in a real world is like and the fact remains we should stop acting like we ar Mr Policeman of the World.
I just saw another news report apparently we really are stirring the hornets nest as our bombers have bombed innocent helpers in Libya - See one mistake and now we are the enemy.
God what a fiasco - makes Cameron look really bad now and I had a little hope he might actually live up to one or two promises.
Snoopy is right UN approval makes nothing right - I mean who is this UN - What gives them the omniscient right to decide the future of another country they know nothing about.
We meddle to much - time to stop the meddling and sort our own house out first!
Our own house is so bad at the moment we have no leg to stand on and certainly no right to decide some other countries fate.
I fear for this country and its people even more now!
Apparently the league of Arab nations are all for this action. That being the case let them sort out Gadaffi at the end of the day its an Arab problem. Cameron in my opinion is wrong to interfere perhaps he will realise this when these fanatics take revenge as they will on the civilian population of this country. Seem as we are in so called financial trouble why finance this action when we cant even police our own streets in a tidy and efficient manner its time our politicians thought of our own nation first.
Totally agree let them wipe each other out - they are a warmongering bunch of nutters even more so than the Usa.
LOL
What i cant understand as you say is how can we afford this - i thought our forces were already stretched and the country is skint!
I was listening to he radio today and heard a local councillor - "this is what the muslims want - all our men abroad being killed in foreign countries whilst they fill our country with more muslims who wont fight or support this country that provides them with shelter and free handouts but slowly take us over, lie cheat and steal from us , rape and kill christian men and women - outbreed us and eventually take over - as this is the Muslim way".
I thought at first that it was going a bit too far but actually if you think about it , it isnt really that far fetched - Apparently the takeover by stealth is the Arab way!
I really feel like emmigrating even more now!
Ideal situation for the government they can sell more arms to both sides of this sad conflict.
