I recently visited a branch of Santander (I know I said that I was going to change but I'm still thinking it through) to pay in some cheques and whilst in branch thought that I would withdraw money over the counter instead of going to the ATM. The young lady behind the counter informed me that if I knew my PIN number that I had to use the machine as they no longer dealt with withdrawals for less than £30 over the counter.
Am I the only one that thinks that this is a bit counterproductive (no pun intended), I had conducted other business and did not feel that it was a waste of her time to carry out this transaction.
I think that if I was a Santander Counter worker I would want to look as busy as possible - they must have so many branches now since taking over so many other building societies, they must be looking at closing some of them - it could just save her job, rather than just sitting there watching people use the ATM.
What do you think?
Another example of customer service down the pan Vettriano.
Hubby and I have been with Alliance and Leicester for years and were quite happy with the service UNTIL Santander got their hands on it.
It has taken forever for the changeover to show any benefits to the customer and we too have pondered whether or not it's time to call it a day.
Your experience is annoying beyond the extreme, it wouldn't have killed her to help you out with your further transaction, it's incredible!!
I agree, Vettriano, and Lillie is right...Santander are not known for their excellent customer service, and although they say they are carrying out improvements, they clearly have a long way to go!
Well this appears to be the thin edge of the 'falling service standards' wedge, doesn't it? I don't think it will be long before all counter transactions incur a service charge as i think that is the way banks want to go. The ATM is a machine and doesn't have to be paid I guess. Gone are the days when you could enter a bank and queue up to be served by up to three or four counter staff. Nowadays, banks are lonely places, full of machines and one human face bobbing about to deal with the odd errant punter or reel you in if you look like a possible sales prospect. All very sad I feel.
Hi Snoopy48, I used to belong to the Portman and they used to know their customers by face. That I feel is a thing of the past.

Hi Lillie, we were with A&L too and were happy - not so happy with Santander though. I can understand if it is busy and having several people queuing to withdraw £10, but the branch was quiet - in fact I was the only person there when I asked!
Given I think that A and L now Santander, use MBNA credit cards, they have had some csh transaction offers for reduced or no interest for 9 or 12 months recently.
