Omendata's thread about the Npower fiasco got me thinking about utility bills in general. I consider myself to be an intelligent person, but my bills from Scottish Power and BT are about as clear as mud!
To be honest, I really wouldn't have a clue if I was being overcharged. Is it any wonder that Npower got away with it for all that time? I'm sure many people just pay up without really knowing what they're paying for.
Do other members agree that the regulators should get off their fat backsides and demand that utility companies make their bills more transparent?
I absolutely agree with you, Feline! (Now there's a surprise, sis!)
I was with Npower prior to switching to First Utility, and Npower's bills were definitely in Sanskrit. I did ring them up and complain about that once, and...wait for it...they agreed! Didn't do anything about it though, no doubt so they could continue their overcharging.
First Utility's bills, on the other hand, are the simplest and clearest I've ever seen! If you have a neighbour/relative who is with First Utility, ask them to show you a bill...you won't believe it till you see it.

Thanks, fruity. I must admit I've never heard of First Utility - will have to check them out on the web.
You're welcome, Feline. They're newish, and not one of the 'big guys' yet, but come well recommended, and you only pay for what you use.
It is hard to work out if I am in Credit or Debit. This really is not good enough.
Mine will be coming up for renewal this year as it's been fixed with Scottish Power for 2 years so will try First Utility and see what they have to offer. Thanks fruity
Sabre, I finished my year with them and have switched to Scottish Power.
Never heard of First Utility either, will look them up
They've been around for a few years now, one of the small energy companies. Very good customer service, but although you pay by monthly direct debit, you pay for what you use, so big bills in the cold months and small bills in the warm months. The old fashioned way! They told me they are intending to offer evened out bills in the near future, so I would seriously consider going back to them when they're offering that.
Did you find Scottish Power cheaper fruity.
Scottish Power are much about the same as First Utility for me, Sabre, but I am paying a little extra as I fixed and capped with SP as well.
