Coalition plans to allow parents to share childcare will allow new fathers to take up to 10 months of paid paternity leave. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will announce the reforms tomorrow in a move which will enable couples to choose how they divide parental leave between them.
How will businesses many of whom are already under financial strain be able to cope with this extra burden? The coalition seems to conduct itself more and more like the previous Labour by trying to stifle small businesses from expanding.
Unless I'm missing something here, how can dividing parental leave between new mothers and new fathers be an extra burden to small businesses? Surely, if the mother takes all the entitled leave, or the father takes all of it, or they divide it between them, it's the same amount of parental leave in total? And surely it would work the same way as it does now as regards notice given?

From a parents point of view I think that this is a great idea. The opportunity for dad to bond with new baby is wonderful - new dad's get two weeks to be at home with the new baby before going back to work. Maybe now it's time for dad's to change a few dirty nappies and get up for the 4am feeds.
From the point of small businesses - if they were paying maternity leave pay, what is the difference? The time is to be split between the mother and the father, not both paid at once.
Personally, when my hubby was home for 5 weeks after number 2 was born, I couldn't wait for him to go back to work and leave me too it!
If I was Prime Minister, I would dictate that any man who had a baby could have as much paternity leave as he could handle ... after all, he would need it!
But seriously Creativesaver, I think your point is that extending paid paternity leave to ten months will simply mean an additional financial burden to the employer. Is that what you are saying? Frankly, I don't think the government would be worried about that financial strain, remember we are in the era of the 'Big Society' where everyone just has to do just a little bit more for everyone else, leaving public spending untouched!

Youngest son and his wife, I'm sure would like to share their responsibilites when the time comes to return to work after the birth of their new little daughter.
This for me truly is a sign of the times, in my day(when dinosaurs walked the earth) it was always the Mothers 'job' to stay home and the Father was the breadwinner, it was just the way things were, I think it's wonderful to have the choice of who goes and who stays.
