I didnt even know about the keyboard overlay on autotellers which is pretty scary.
Bet you didnt know Royal Bank Of Scotland was ripped off from inside to the tune of 10 million.
The banks are having these problems all the time but they keep it quite to avoid the newspapers getting the info and destabilising their stock market value. You would be shocked at some of the frauds going on!
Hi Omendate. Yes, I have met many people who have fallen foul of this, normally skimming edvices attached to ATMs or even where well known garage chain operatives have replaced the card reader with one that records your card and pin details for later use. I am ultra careful at ATMs and always inspect them and look for tampering or attachments etc. I used a Natwest one recently that took my card very slowly and gave it back very slowly, like the feeder was generating a copy. It has also been reported that people can attach a card skimmer and then stand behind you and catch your pin as you enter it. I think there should be legislation that every ATM should have a 6' by 6' hazard box drawn around it on the floor where only the user is permitted. The bottom line here is that no one is 100% safe and if a scam is possible in theory, you can bet your life that someone will take it to operational standard. It's simple ( albeit criminal ) income generation from the other end of the bucket so to speak. And where there is a will, there is always a way. And the only way to combat it is by awareness .. trust no one, inspect the whole process on every transaction and of course check your bank and credit card balances and statements at least every two days. With on-line banking this is so much simpler and accesible in real time.
Yeah its called the Lebanese lift named and pioneered by our wonderful immigrant population!
Most of the credit card fraud in the Uk is carried out in the Asian community unfortunately. As an ex police officer I saw some amazingly clever and devious inventions by them that made millions.
I see one newsagent in London was done recently for trafficking over £27 million in heroin and thats just the tip of the iceberg down there.I'm glad i left london its not a nice place.
I try, whenever possible, to always use the same ATM, that way I'd notice if there was anything different about it. Having said that, about 6 months ago I noticed that the ATM did look different, couldn't quite work out why, it just looked different. So, duly went into the bank to mention it before I used it, only to be told that the bank had just put a brand new one in that morning! Ever felt like an idiot?! :-)
Every day, Every day!!!
>;o)
Why does that not surprise me?! ;-)
