I find it quite offensive that Wikileaks is being treated like some dictatorial regime in the way it has managed to dessiminate genuine info about what US goverment officials think of other governments and the attitude also of UK government. As more and more truth comes out about politicians' "behind the scenes" hypercritical views the organisation itself is now under commercial attack for telling the truth with its e-commerce facilities being unplugged by Mastercard, VISA and Paypal to name but just 3 organisations. Is this really democratic action from so called democratically elected government?
I believe the duty being done is a solid one, and only wish it had been coming to light sooner. I think the whole scenario with Assange being accused of sexual assault occuring at the same time? It seems a little suspicious to me. So long live WikiLeaks, they'll never be able to close it down anyway.
I am all for the release of information which highlights how governments are acting in our supposed name. However, some of that information must be done so in a responsible manner.
I am not advocating censorship.
Information should be released but not if it places at risk people who are undertaking imporatnt work on the behalf of governments that ultimately protects our security and freedoms.
Some information can and will play into the hands of those who are intent on causing harm to innocent people.
100% agree with you, Parchester, well said!
My thoughts exactly, Parchester.
Agree with you Parchester - would have written something similar but you saved me having so to do! Some information should be kept confidential. I suspect there is a generational difference of opinion here as to the rights and wrongs of this case.
As I am in my 60's are you saying the young disapprove because I certainly don't? The beauty of the internet is that our masters are being found out.
Hi pipmkl, I'm sorry I don't understand your point. What has age to do with anything I am saying? If anything I am advocating openess but not where it endangers human life. I am all for freedom of information.
Somewhere on here was a comment that approval of wilkileaks was age related, it does not appear now. If it wasn't yours then I apologise.
Now found it,it was Sidesalads comment.
I might be wrong but Didn't it all turn out to be a hoax, and the papers have now had to make public apologies for printing what they did. If there is a real organisation who give info that the public should be in the know about, I would be all for it, but if this organisation (or any other) just puts out rubbish or hoaxes then they are just as bad as the media.
The media are still citing information from wikileaks, so a hoax? I think not. If these were hoaxes, why are so many senior political figures getting very disturbed by the release of these?
It looks far from a hoax, wendiew, sadly!
Sorry - I wasn't sure what it was I'd read but recalled something about Wikileaks and hoax. Have now found the item and copied it below. It was fake Wikileaks cables .... I only glanced at it earlier .. I will read more thoroughly and try to remember it next time!!: Papers sorry after WikiLeaks hoax:Leading Pakistani newspapers have acknowledged they were hoaxed after publishing reports based on fake WikiLeaks cables containing crude anti-Indian propaganda. The reports - which featured prominently in several papers on Thursday - cited alleged US diplomatic cables as confirming many right-wing Pakistani views and conspiracy theories about India and the disputed Kashmir region. Much of Pakistan's media takes a pro-military, anti-Indian line. The instigator of the hoax material remains unclear, though it appeared to have originated on a news website known for anti-Indian and anti-Hindu articles. One paper, The Express Tribune, published an apology on Friday. Others admitted they were hoaxed.
There seems to be nothing of signifficance in these leaks just aload of tittle tattle of no use to anyone, Assange seems a bit of an oddball, but doe's not deserve to be treated in the way that he is being treated. I understand that the charges of sexual misconduct have been brought up before by another prosecuter in Sweden, but were found to have no basis.
Wikileaks is awesome.
And the USA's response really shows up the true colours of their government.
I'd written something stronger, but frankly I don't want to be picked up by Men in Black following a sweep of this site by Echelon...
You mean the fact that Saudis and half of the Arab peninsula urged the USA to Nuke Iran and they didnt.
Well done USA for exercising restraint on that one - In the future though I doubt when Iran Nuke Israel or provide the plutonium for a bomb that will explode in central London or New York whether they will exercise the same restraint!!!
I can't tell if you're taking the mick or you're genuinely that pro-Washington...
Congratulations for not nuking Iran would be like the average person on the street getting congratulated every time they didn't give their fellow pedestrians a good kicking.
And anyway, nuke the middle east? The last thing America wants is to be motoring around in cars powered by radioactive gasoline...
Definitely not Pro Washington been to America a few times and not going back.
And yes I was being somewhat facetious!
I was serious about Iran they are nutters the west simply doesnt have a handle on the muslim mentality - they would nuke Israel in the blink of an eye if they had the method and means. The hatred of the jews out there is simply horrifying.
Dont you think after 4000 years of persecution the Jewish people deserve a break - after all they are the most intelligent people on the planet - where do you think all the modern inventions come from - defence , innovation , computers it comes from Israel and the jewish people!
And not I am not Jewish - I am a Neo Radical Presbyterian Goth with Anarchistic undertones!
I think it is vital to question government. So many of our sources for doing this, like the press, are now compromised because they are part of large conglomerates, and have a company agenda. If we had reporters who behaved more professionally, and asked the tough questions organisations such as wikileaks would be redundant. But they don't, so I hope people continue to ask questions and bring to light information we can use to make critical evaluations of our 'leaders'. I think we have to use information responsibly, and yes, sometimes that means keeping things quiet for a period of time, but it seems all too clear that governments are abusing their positions.
