If I don't watch sport, what's the point paying every month for Sky? I've just bought a free-sat box. A one off cost of £200 (there are cheaper ones out there) and more channels than I could possibly watch. Films - I have LoveFilm and the local Blockbuster.
Surely Sky has to offer something extra to the average TV watcher or everyone will start to move away?
This is a very valid point. In the last few months Sky has informed me that my monthly subscription is to be increased by £2.50p per month. If I wanted to have HD that would be a further £10 per month.
I feel that I am subsidising all their new 'advances' such as HD and 3D.
I love my sport and they have me over a barrell, as they hold most of the rights to the sports I love to watch. I know of BT offering football via them securing the rights to screen Sky Sports 1 and 2 but I dislike BT as much as I'm beginning to dislike Sky.
It will only be a few months, if not a year, before they move all their sports coverage exclusively to their HD channels and this will mean upgrading my TV and my Sky + box and payinmg an additional premium. That will spell the end of my association with Sky, I am in no way paying £750 per year just to watch football and cricket!!
Up until 12 months ago I quite happily lived without Sky but eventually gave in after years of badgering by my daughter!! Despite the £1 monthly increase I am facing this month I will still continue to subscribe. I have the HD package already although to be fair I can never really tell the difference between the HD channels and the non HD channels. What I personally like is being able to record programmes to watch at my convenience and at the touch of a button and being able to pause live tv. I do not watch a great deal but it has given me greater choice and flexibility when I can get Nickolodean off!! I only subscribe to the entertainment and children's package as I am not a big sports fan and I am not that desperate to watch the latest movie releases which is obviously where the big money lies. I have been happy with the package that I do pay for but would always consider changing if a more competitive deal came along. I am with Parchester though on his feelings with regard to BT and would hope to never ever pay them a single penny again!! 3D is obviously the next big thing but I will not be upgrading to include this in my package regardless of my daughter's pleas!
The free-sat box I bought offers - HD channels, ability to record programmes, ability to pause live TV, lots of kids channels. Once you've bought the box, there's nothing more to pay - ever! And if you already have a Sky dish you can plug your free-sat box into the same cable, and away you go.
That's really useful to know Mr Wallet, thanks. I am tied in with Sky for at least another 12 months as I just recently upgraded to include their broadband package but in another 12 months I will definitely consider looking at something like this as it sounds ideal for the what we need.
Can you get the other Sky channels through your box and sky dish MrWallet? I like Sky 1, but as far as I know it's only available if you pay the sky subscription. If I can get it through a different (ie 'free') route I would be delighted.
I hate the costs for sky - they have been quite competitive lately, I admit, but to be honest, I'm with you. I'd much rather have a free sat box etc. I currently just have the standard freeview box but am waiting for the freeview HD boxes to come down in price before I get one.
If you watch lots of sports then I guess that it's a good buy, but for the films, I'd rather just wait for them to come out on DVD or blueray.
On the other hand though, I am looking forward to all this '3D' TV coming out lately. I am amazed by it and can't wait for that to become standard in every home.
Sky is the ocmpany that brings out the new technology, making it more accessible for homes around the UK, but at the moment, I'm more than happy without it all.
It depends how much TV you watch - I barely find anything that I want to watch on Freeview so am rather against paying a monthly fee for TV. My Dad on the other hand wouldn't live without Sky sports so I think it'll be around for a while yet unless something dramatic happens to sports sponsorship.
Personally, I don't watch a lot of television. I rarely find things I want to watch or can truly get into, and I only ever choose to watch TV when my other half is out of the house, as he derives far more enjoyment from television than I do.
For his birthday this year, I bought Sky. I paid the set-up fees and the first month of subscription, with the full HD package and every possible channel, on the condition that we would then split every future cost 50/50.
He loves Sky for the sports and the comedy, but I love having the option to record those few programmes that I do enjoy (mostly documentaries and dramas) and watch them whilst he's out to keep myself occupied. Without Sky, I'd find nothing to watch, but it's nice to have the choice!
